Fifty Dates of Doom

The new month was coming and the weather was great. It wasn't too hot, or too cold. It was a comfortable time. However, Ava was not in a good mood.

Her plan to stay at home peacefully was interrupted when her parents called her out early in the morning.

"This is the list." Her mother dropped a list in front of her, leaving her baffled.

"What exactly is this?" She asked; she believed that her mother was playing a joke at the moment.

"Go for a blind date and find someone you want to marry." Even her mother's words were shocking.

Ava was suddenly hit with a wave of astonishment. Her eyes scanned the file with her mouth twitching.

"Mom... why are there fifty names here?" What was going through her mother's mind?

She woke her up early in the morning for something like this? Is this a means to have her leave the house?

Ava's hands shook as she reviewed the document more closely. "The timing, names, likes, hobbies, professions and even phone numbers are all here! Dad!"

"My ears, Ava. My ears." Her father lamented.

He sat close to them but didn't interfere as his wife lectured their daughter. Despite being a very successful businessman; he was a fool for his wife.

He listened to what they said without saying much. Inspite that, he didn't agree to this idea of hers.

When his wife had approached him with a way to find a husband for his daughter, he showed disapproval immediately.

He firmly believed that no man is worthy of his daughter. Ava could only get married when she reached sixty.

His wife only convinced him to agree with this after much scrutiny of the candidates.

"Why are you calling your father. Do you think he can help you! Have you know that the list was originally much longer than this." Her mother wagged her fingers at her. "If it wasn't because of your father, you would have gotten close to three hundred blind dates."

Despite everything going on and the confusion; Ava turned to her father with a serious look. "Thank you, dad!"

Her mother- Mrs. Winslow slammed her hands on the table and sprang up. "The one you should be thanking is me! Look at how I'm working hard for my ungrateful daughter!"

"Mom!" Ava almost hit the table too. "Why are you trying to have me killed by setting up fifty blind dates!"

"They have been informed of it. So they wouldn't talk beyond their set time." Mrs. Winslow nodded, ignoring the wretched look on her daughter's face.

"So there are fifty other people in cahoots in killing me?!" Ava could hardly believe what she was hearing. "And also, why is it set for me to attend to ten persons a day!"

The names of the people in that list weren't your average guy; they were sons of distinguished people. Some themselves being at the top themselves, in reputation, wealth, everything.

How did her mother have access to this much contact? And why did such people agree to something like this!

Regardless of her daughter's outburst, Mrs. Winslow was as calm as she could be.

"I made it that way so you'll finish this up in a week. Having ten dates a day means, you'll be over in five days, aren't you happy?"

Ava's eyes twitched continuously. "I'm mortified."

Mrs. Winslow's continued to ignore her daughter's plight.

"I'm not trying to kill you, darling... Ava! Release it! Don't you dare tear it apart."

Ava gritted her teeth, the file in her hands already deformed. She threw it to a corner and stood up abruptly.

An awkward smile adorned her face, her eyes kept twitching.

"Well now, I better get ready for my ten blind dates today." She forced out through her gritted teeth.

Her movements were robotic as she stood up, walking up to stairs to her room.

Mrs. Winslow was looking pitifully at the innocent file that got damaged from misdirected anger.

"Why did you have to tear this apart! Do you think that will solve anything!" She shouted at her daughter's back.

Ava didn't glance at her mother and simply headed to her room.

When she left, Mrs. Winslow placed the file back on the table.

"You've done your duty well." To be honest, she had another few spares in her drawer.

She figured that Ava might destroy them everyday so she had up to ten.

Mrs. Winslow hurried to get another one ready before Ava came down.

Meanwhile, Mr. Winslow was watching everything while going through his work documents and sipping on his tea.

Honesty, the tea in the cup had finished a while ago but the action of drinking tea helped him keep out from the rigorous conversation his wife and daughter were having.

That was all that mattered.

He dropped the empty cup back on the table and sighed; his heart going out for his daughter.

Upstairs, Ava plopped on her bed; face down.

Should she run away to the villa till all this was over? No, her mother would track her down relentlessly.

Moreover, if she goes to the blind date and make a full of herself, her reputation might take a hit. This could further harm her family's reputation on the long run!

She couldn't do it that way either.

No other choice but to go to the stupid blind date.

Mrs. Winslow was packing a few things for Ava when she looked up and saw her daughter coming down, fully dressed.

She smiled, nodding her head. "Good, very good. This isn't your best dress but it's still suitable."

Ava wore a drained expression, causing her mother to frown.

"Fix your face. This is for your own good. After all you're not getting younger anymore. Most girls your age are already engaged, if I don't do something now I know I'll regret not talking to you."

And this was the something? What a way to go overboard.

"I'm twenty-four, mom. I'm still young. Hah... Let's just get this over with." Ava dragged herself to the door.

Before she left, her mother called out to her.

"Wait a minute! Take this..."

A bag was shoved in Ava's hands; her mother started explaining and pointing out to things in it.

"Drink this when your throat hurts from talking. Eat this when you get hungry after your first five. If you get hungry before that, eat this one... here's some juice and water... this is a pepper spray..."

Ava had a deadpan look and she wasn't even paying attention to anything her mother was saying.

"Also, the venue isn't far from here so you can walk there and when you're done, walk back." Her mother continued, oblivious. "This will serve as an exercise since you normally don't do any... Also, the file is inside too, use this to go through their details so that you'll know how to lead the conversation."

This was the time she was supposed to be helping out with the company's work with her father.

Speaking of which, her father walked to her and patted her shoulder while glancing at his wife chattering away.

Both Ava and Mr. Winslow tuned her out as they spoke to each other.

"I'm sorry I couldn't stop this before it blew out."

"At least you managed to reduce the number."

In their conversation, her mother spoke about the blind dates being a lot more but was trimmed down because of her father. She was thankful for that.

Ava snapped out of her thoughts and saw her parents giving her serious looks.

"Ava always remember, if anyone tries anything you can hit them, we will handle the aftermath."

"Right between the legs." Her mother looked so serious.

Kicking such powerful persons in the shin.

Hah! She wondered how it would feel like.

Maybe she would faint from the dread she would feel after one of them threatens to cut our business ventures.

Ava forgot that she was one of those powerful people in high society too.
