Joey continued sleeping and didn't hear her. Once she woke up, she realized that Selena didn't stop the car in front of the studio. Instead, they were at a newly developed apartment in a residential area.
She stared dumbly at Selena and asked, "Are you here for a client?"
Selena saw Joey had woken up and dangled the keys from her fingers. She said, "Of course! I'll show you what luxury is!"
Only when Joey got out of the car did she realize that Selena was bluffing. There was no client! This was an apartment Selena had secretly bought for Joey!
It wasn't a big space with three rooms, but it was more than enough for Joey to live alone.
Selena explained with concern, "I'm worried that the jerk would steal your assets, so this place stays under my name for now. I'll transfer the ownership to you once you've settled the divorce."
Joey held the keys in her hands and stayed silent in bewilderment.
Selena waved her hands like it wasn't a big deal. "Come on, you're the one who's been bringing in all the money anyway!
"You haven't been taking your rightful share of earnings every year. That's why you should take this apartment in return! I'm still waiting for your drafts to score bigger deals for us in the future!"
Joey didn't hold back anymore and accepted the keys to the apartment.
The next morning, she was awakened from sleep by her phone. She took a look and saw 33 missed calls. Selena had called 32 times, and the other call was from Zachary.
Joey immediately called Selena and asked, "What happened?"
"It's nothing. I'm just telling you that you can let your work take the backseat for now," Selena answered. "I was worried that you couldn't come up with so many designs in time.
"Well, what do you know? Some clients said the actual dresses were different from what they had expected.
"They're canceling the orders, even giving up their deposits. Our poor, unwanted dresses are still hanging in the shop. I guess all our efforts were wasted."
Joey frowned and repeated, "The dresses were different from their expectations?"
They had never encountered such an issue over the several years of running the studio. They were just a small studio that slowly grew their reputation. Big brands would not make things difficult for them like this.
Joey grasped her phone as her fingers paled. She said, "Wait right there. I'm coming over."
She hung up and quickly hailed a taxi to the studio. She was still texting Selena on her way there.
Suddenly, a Twitter notification popped up on her phone. Julia's post was trending on Twitter. Joey had forgotten when she followed Julia on Twitter.
An inexplicable urge grew in her, and she tapped on the notification.
Julia had posted a selfie with the caption: "The happiest thing in the world is probably having someone who would burn the world for you over a single little thing."
Her selfie had Eastwell Entertainment in the background. At the bottom right corner, half of a man's shoulder could be spotted. The man was wearing a distinct suit with expensive fabric and intricate design.
It was the same suit Zachary wore when Joey and Selena visited Kent. Zachary had sabotaged Chloe's business because he couldn't get her to design a dress!
He had no regard for Joey at all!
What a scumbag!
Joey unfollowed Julia and dimmed her phone screen. Frustration roiled in her heart.
The studio was in a mess as all the phones began to ring. Joey picked up some of the calls, which were mostly about canceling orders.
"Have we contacted the clients? What did they say?" Joey asked.
Selena didn't want Joey to worry, but she revealed the truth in a fit of anger. The numbers of their losses were skyrocketing.
She said, "They had a ton of lame excuses. Anyway, they insisted that our dresses didn't fit their requirements.
"I managed to get word from one of our long-time clients after great difficulty. They only said that someone paid them off. They were asking if we offended anyone."
Who else could they have offended?
Of course, it had to be Zachary!
Joey went straight to the point. "How much did we lose?"
"All these were customized orders according to the clients' body measurements. I planned to settle the bills with the factory once we received the full payment. Now that they sent the dresses back, we won't be getting the money. We can't afford to pay the factory," Selena explained.
"Adding up all the rejected orders, it comes to t-two million …"
Two million …
The studio would have to shut its doors at this rate. Joey was furious. She was about to speak when her phone suddenly rang.
She looked down at the screen.
It was a call from Zachary.
