Two Million for a Meal

"We're going back to the Gray Residence tonight. Grandpa wants to see you," Zachary said.

Joey was already angry to begin with, as she was drowning in the canceled orders and increasing debt. She huffed when she heard Zachary.

She said coldly, "I don't think it's appropriate for me to go there."

Zachary, who was on the other side of the phone, stayed silent for a few seconds before bossily

demanding, "We haven't divorced. It's not up to you whether you get to sit out of it."

Harold and Rose had raised Zachary since he was a child due to certain reasons. Therefore, Zachary respected and treated his grandparents very well. That was why he did not object when his grandparents asked him to marry Joey.

In Zachary's and Joey's three years of marriage, Zachary's understanding of marital duties consisted of two things. One was to consummate their marriage once a month, and the other was to reassure his grandparents their marriage was going strong by visiting the Gray Residence as a loving couple.

Whoever dared to hurt his grandparents' hearts could forget about living on earth.

If this were any other time, Joey would write it off as Zachary's bossy presidential persona getting in the way. However, he was calling at this time when her studio was in a crisis.

Joey chuckled wryly.

All her feelings in the past three years had indeed gone to waste. She never moved Zachary's heart, not even close. He was forcing her into a corner because of Julia.

Joey took a deep breath and cut to the chase. She asked, "If I go back to the Gray Residence with you, does it mean the studio's crisis will be solved?"

Zachary answered without much thinking, "Yes. I'll come pick you up at night."

After he hung up, his thin lips unknowingly curled into a smile. He was in a better mood than expected. He had seldom been the one to contact Joey first.

Even when Charles asked him to take Joey back to the Linton Residence, he would leave the job to his assistant. However, Joey had been grumpy with him recently. Hence, Zachary decided to make the call personally.

He was trying to get her to reconcile with him.

Zachary called the internal line and ordered coldly, " Run a check on Emmen Fashion and see what's going on with them now. If there are any problems, just deal with it. You don't have to ask me for further instructions."

Soon, the deals Emmen Fashion had lost came back within half a day.

Selena was still having a headache over the two million dollars they owed the factory. All of a sudden, the clients who had canceled contacted her. The clients even offered to raise the price to make up for the studio's losses. Some paid in full and transferred all the funds immediately.

Selena whipped her head around to stare at Joey in a mix of surprise and worry. She asked, "Zachary did this?"

Joey had an icy look on her face, the same feeling she had in her heart. She replied dryly, "Yeah. A meal for two million in exchange. It's a good deal."

It was 7:00 pm.

Zachary came promptly for Joey, taking her to the Gray Residence. They stayed silent throughout the journey.

They reached the front door when Zachary stopped. He looked at Joey's indifferent expression and felt dissatisfied. He chastised, "Grandpa will definitely be suspicious of us with that look on your face."

Joey squeezed out a professional smile on her face in the next second. She said, "Don't worry. I'll fake it all the way since I made a promise with you." Zachary's gaze grew dark in a surge of frustration. She said she was going to fake it. That meant she still

wanted to divorce. However, he clearly helped her out of Emmen Fashion's crisis. Why was she still

unhappy?

There was only one possibility left, according to Zachary's deduction. He took a jab at Joey. "So you

found a new man?"

Joey's perfunctory smile faded that instant. She bit back, "And what if I did?"

He could get a mistress for himself, but not her?

Zachary's temples throbbed in agitation. He was about to say something when the door opened.

Maisie chuckled in surprise. "Mr. Zachary and Madam Joey, you're back!"

Zachary gave up on refuting Joey. He hummed at Maisie and entered the house in big strides.

Joey and Zachary went in different directions once they were in the house. Zachary headed straight upstairs for Edward, while Joey went to see Harold

and Rose.

Rose pulled Joey close to her and observed her figure.

She asked, "You're still not pregnant?" Then, she sighed and changed the topic. "It's okay. You can

always try next time."

While Rose didn't sound like she was blaming Joey, Joey felt the pressure.

Joey would tense up whenever she thought about

getting pregnant. It was a constant reminder that they were never on equal footing in this marriage.

She had been enthusiastic about preparing for a baby

in the past. She also thought Rose would be understanding of her.

That was until one day when she overheard Rose chatting with the butler.

Rose had spoken in disdain, "I agreed for her to

marry Zachary because I thought she would give him

an heir. Her grandfather owes us his life. It's only

right that she returns the favor by giving us a newborn.

"Their family will owe us nothing only when she

manages to have a baby. Otherwise, who knows what the Lintons are thinking? Maybe they think they are doing us such a huge favor by giving us their daughter. What a joke!"
