She's Not a Servant

Charles had been an honorable man his whole life. Rose's nasty comments were uncalled for.

Joey also wanted a child. However, that depended on Zachary, didn't it?

Joey felt hurt when she thought of it. Despite that, she obediently replied to Rose, "Sure, Grandma."

Harold frowned and reprimanded Rose, "It's not every day that Joey comes back to visit us. Now stop being obsessed over pregnancy and babies."

Rose rebutted, "Oh, you're the one talking? Don't you want a great-grandson?"

Harold changed the topic. "Joey, I heard some rumors outside. What do you think about them?"

Joey remained polite and answered, "I believe Zachary will take care of those rumors."

Harold was satisfied with her reply. He said, "No matter what they say, you're the only daughter-in- law the Gray family will acknowledge. Those

uncultured women can dream if they want to join our family."

Rose added, "Also, you have to work hard and give birth to Zachary's baby. Once you two have a child, of course he'll come home more often."

She saw that Harold was about to chastise her again and stopped nagging at Joey. "Okay, okay, I won't talk about it anymore. Joey, you should stay over for the night. I've made your favorite soup."

Joey was about to reply when Rose happily left for the kitchen.

Harold's stern gaze softened when he looked at Joey. He comforted, "Joey, don't take Rose's words to heart. All she wants is just for you and Zachary to be happy."

Joey replied indifferently, "I understand, Grandpa."

Harold noticed her lukewarm attitude and sighed. He asked, "How's your grandma?"

A gentle look flashed across Joey's face at the mention of her grandmother. Even her smile grew with warmth. She answered, "My grandma's been doing quite well."

Harold continued, "Does she still not want to live together with you guys?"

Joey paused in a daze before explaining, "She's gotten used to a carefree life in the countryside. She finds the city too loud and bustling. I've asked the people in her neighborhood to look after her."

Joey shared some daily moments about Monica since Harold was friends with both her grandparents. Joey clearly cared about Monica a lot. She even knew how many times Monica fed the chickens that day.

Harold glanced at Joey and almost went into a daze as if he had seen another woman's face through Joey. He mused, "Charles is lucky to have a granddaughter like you."

Joey was surprised and smiled. "No, I'm the lucky one to have my grandparents raise me."

Harold said nothing more.

After dinner, Joey and Zachary returned to their room.

This was the first time they would be staying at the Gray Residence, excluding their wedding night.

Joey felt out of place.

Zachary was the first to speak. "Grandma had a health checkup yesterday, and it turns out that her heart isn't well. Thanks for promising her that you'd stay tonight."

Joey nodded nonchalantly. "It's fine. Don't mention it. I'm just playing my part."

She could do this in exchange for the two million dollars. She just had to sleep here anyway. What difference did it make where she slept?

After internalizing her emotions, Joey entered the

room with her head held high.

The room was their bedroom as newlyweds. The

initially simple and cool bedroom with a

monochrome theme was now covered with soft

carpets. The lights were off. There was only a big red candle lit up at the coffee table.

Joey's footsteps stopped. She was reminded of what happened on their wedding night. The same candle had flickered that night.

She had thought that they would stay polite and curt on that fateful night. She did not know what happened that made them do the deed.

Afterward, Zachary was suspicious of her and thought that she had drugged him on their wedding night. He

ignored her for a long time.

Therefore, Joey did not have fond memories regarding this room. The pain she experienced for the

first time that night would still haunt her. Besides, Zachary had been a brute and ravished her for the whole night.

Joey closed her eyes and regained her composure. She

turned to leave, saying, "I-I'll ask Ms. Maisie for

another room."

Zachary frowned. "So you're going to let Grandpa and Grandma know that we sleep in separate rooms?"

Joey's anger almost got to her. She took a few deep

breaths and said coldly, "Then we'll sleep in separate beds. You're sleeping on the couch."

Zachary frowned even harder. Displeasure was clear in his tone as he asked, "Why am I sleeping on the

couch? I'm not the one who demanded to sleep in separate beds."

Joey was annoyed, but she couldn't counter him.

Fine, she would take the couch. It was only for a night.

That jerk wasn't even worried that Julia would be

jealous of him and Joey in the same room. Why should Joey care?

Meanwhile, two suspicious figures stood outside the

door.

"Have you put the stuff in?" Rose asked in a low voice and looked at the tray Maisie was holding.

"Yes, I've put it in according to the dosage. It won't

be dangerous to the baby," Maisie replied in a hushed tone. "But should we really do this? I just don't think

it's right."

Rose said, "There's nothing right or wrong about this. It will only benefit her if she gets pregnant. If

she doesn't get pregnant even after doing this, I'm

afraid she's infertile. I'll have to make other preparations then."

She concluded sternly, "Go now. Make sure she finishes the whole thing with your own eyes."
