He Did It

They darted down and folded the wings on their backs. Owen casually entered the back of the partially opened car and saw three children lying unconscious. Blood was flowing from their temples due to the impact. Although they were unconscious, Owen could speak to their spirits.

"Alright, Charlie, oh, here you are. "Your name is Charlie?" Owen asked as he tapped the shoulder of a boy who was wedged between suitcases.

The boy's spirit woke up and was surprised to see Owen, "Who, you?"

"I am the angel of death who will take you to the afterlife. Your name is Charlie, right?"

"I-I'm Charles. Charlie is my twin brother; he's lying over there," said the boy's spirit as he pointed to a child lying on the highway.

Apparently when the accident happened, Charlie was thrown out due to the violent impact.

"Oh, right. I almost picked up the wrong person. Thank you for your help. I'll come get you in sixty-two years."

Owen stood up and stepped out of the van to walk over to Charlie. He looked to the side as he saw Elio struggling to pull the man who was hysterically screaming about not wanting to go to the afterlife and rambling on about how he didn't want to die right now. That was entertainment for Owen.

" Are you Charlie?", asked Owen as he patted the boy's shoulder, and then the boy's spirit woke up.

Charlie just nodded and Owen held out his hand. The boy looked at him skeptically, still not grasping what was going on.

"No! Don't, Charlie!" his twin brother in the van screamed, trying to escape from his body but couldn't, because he could only escape if he had grasped the hand of the Angel of Death.

"Charles? He's bleeding. I have to help him."

"No, you can't," Owen interrupted Charlie, "You're hurt too. See?"

Charlie turned around to look at his body lying there with a lot of blood pouring from his head.

"I'm bleeding a lot. What should I do?" Charlie asked, looking both worried and sad.

Owen smiled. "I can help you." , he said, extending his hand again.

This time Charlie believed and took Owen's hand. Instantly a cloud flew down, and a staircase emerged from it. Charlie was both surprised and impressed.

"Let's go up."

Charlie unhesitatingly followed Owen's steps, while behind him, Charles-- the twin brother, kept shouting desperately for him to come back. He seemed to want to catch up but couldn't because his spirit was still bound to his body.

"Let it go," Owen said, looking at Charlie, who looked pityingly at his twin brother. "If he comes with us now, then soon I'll have to pick up your mother too. It's too much trouble. So let them catch up with you later."

***

Charlie's pickup wasn't the only heartwarming event. Owen had seen it many times and didn't care at all. After all, angels of death like Owen didn't have as many complex emotions as humans, making it easier for them to carry out their duties without a hitch.

The next client had appeared on the new page. This time it was an old lady, who was about to die after going shopping. Owen immediately rushed to find her with his radar powers and followed her wherever she went. This time Owen was tired of flying and wanted to walk. Despite being among thousands of people passing by, Owen was invisible to them and could walk straight without a hitch.

The grandmother stopped at a crosswalk, mixed in with dozens of people waiting for the traffic lights to change their colors. There Owen met another angel of death, named Pett. They chatted briefly, asking each other about their clients. Pett found a young woman carrying her baby. Owen saw the back of the woman carrying the baby a few meters in front of him, standing in the front row, and nodded in understanding.

The woman was Nora, aged 22, and already had a two-year-old daughter named Aileen. She was about to go to the daycare to drop off her child so she could go to work and would pick her up when her work was done. Today Aileen was a little cranky, didn't want to be put in the baby stroller, and kept crying if Nora didn't move.

Unfortunately, she was caught at a red light before crossing at the last second, so Aileen cried again. She intended to cover her daughter's mouth with a bottle of pacifier, but when she was about to take the bottle from the baby bag, Aileen wailed again until the bottle was accidentally kicked by her foot and fell from Nora's hand.

The woman next to her took pity and offered to hold her daughter so that Nora could pick up and clean the bottle before giving it to Aileen. Nora gladly accepted the help.

Unfortunately, Owen was mistaken about Pett's client. The woman Owen thought was Pett's client was the woman who was helping Nora. Owen only paid attention briefly because Pett invited him to talk about other angels of death who were involved in a big conflict between fellow angels.

The lights changed color, and people began to walk forward. Owen said goodbye because he had to follow his client, and just then he heard the sound of a truck honking its horn from the end of the road, at high speed. He didn't see any Angel of Death in the vicinity who might have planned it all. When he turns to Pett, his reaction is as surprised as any other human, which means Pett is not the culprit.

Without a second thought, with his powers, Owen instantly stopped time and quickly moved the woman to the side of the road and then re-ran time. The truck crashed into a traffic light pole, and the woman survived.

Suddenly, a black cloud appeared along with thunder and lightning. Time stopped, leaving Owen confused.

"Owen!" someone shouted from the crowd.

When he turned around, it was Pett with a pale face.

"Owen!!! You saved my client! What are you doing?!"

Angels of death are forbidden to kill or help humans avoid death. If they do, then they will face severe punishment.
