The Judgement Day

The day that none of the Angels of Death could have imagined had finally come to Owen. His good intentions were disastrous for him. Nora and her daughter, Aileen, survived. But not Owen. Without waiting any longer, right after Owen saved Nora, the gates of death opened, and a huge voice calling Owen's name could be heard echoing throughout the city whose time was at a standstill.

A second later Owen was already in the court, a place where humans would be judged on what place they would fit into in the afterlife before finally being reborn. The line of clients waiting for their turn was dispersed for the more urgent emergency of Owen's trial.

After all the deceased humans had gone elsewhere to sterilize the courtroom from humans, all the angels of death were present to bear witness to the strictness of heaven's law. Time on earth was stopped on purpose so that this sudden trial would not disturb a single Angel of Death from their work on a busy day like today.

Unlike the other angels of death, the hundreds of angels of death sent to the scene of the natural disaster were happy about this event. It's a break for them when they have to work fast and precisely to deliver the many casualties of the disaster. For them, this is like a lunch break for humans. They were hoping it would last longer.

In front of Owen now, there was a large, ivory-white table with gold carvings, standing firmly on the soft-looking clouds. Behind the table was the Heavenly Leader, who spent his life deciding on the sins committed by humans. The Heavenly Leader is not the Supreme Being, the Creator. He was just like the angel of death and humans, both created beings. It was just that his existence was very small, and he only carried out his duties in accordance with the nature of his creation.

"Owen Kai." A booming voice rang throughout the sky; it was the voice of the Heavenly Leader. Anyone who heard it would immediately fall to their knees, trembling.

"I am, Your Majesty.", Owen knelt with one foot on the clouds and bowed, saluting.

"I got the day off to a good start by organizing all the schedules and clients. No riots, everything is in order; it looks to be a peaceful day for me, and I hope so for everyone. I thought it was one of the best days out of the millions I've had, until, you!", the thunderous sound of lightning suddenly struck, and the clouds turned gray, like a big storm was coming. Owen lowered his head even more.

"How could a role model angel like you commit such a grave sin?!"

"I have been negligent, Your Majesty!" , Owen said, showing his regret.

"Enough! There is never any tolerance for mistakes like this! You all know how important our duty is to maintain the balance of the universe. If there is one, single one of you all who does something that is not in your nature, then it is the same as you defying the universe! The entire universe will curse you! There is no mercy! All this must be done so that the same mistakes are not repeated."

Lightning struck again, and Owen raised his head and crawled to the giant table in front of him and pleaded with both his hands and his pitiable face.

"Your Majesty, please forgive me! I promise not to do the same foolishness again in the future! I also promise to treat the juniors better, Your Majesty! You cannot give me this kind of punishment, Your Majesty! Look at my performance of duty! Have you ever seen an angel of death work so neatly and diligently, Your Majesty?! The other angels of death will have a hard time if there are no angels of death like me, Your Majesty!" urged Owen, hoping that all the records of his work could be used for an appeal or at least raise some doubts.

The angels of death in attendance looked at Owen with a flat stare. No compassion at all. Some of them even laughed at him silently. It was only natural, because Owen's reputation among the angels of death was very bad. Although his work record was very good, his reputation as a coworker was not good enough. Only a handful of people saw Owen as a friendly and cooperative Angel of Death, and they were Elio and Pett.

Both of them sat in the front row so they could clearly see how Owen begged for forgiveness. Pett looked at him sadly while Elio was already in tears. Pett immediately took Elio's head in his arms, asking Elio to be strong and not to be caught crying. Because that would only make Elio replace Owen, kowtowing in front of the Heavenly Leader.

The negotiations were fruitless. All the tears that came out and also Owen's work track record did not manage to touch the heart of the very authoritarian Heavenly Leader. Without even blinking, he immediately put a red stamp on Owen's personal data, signaling that he was already on the red list. An Angel of Death to be avoided or as the angels called it, exiled.

"Owen Kai, due to your actions that severely harmed your coworkers while disrupting the balance in the universe, you will be sentenced to DEATH!"

All the reapers present were stunned, as if they were the ones being sentenced. Owen was rooted to the spot with his mouth open, all his dreams and future goals shattered just because of one human.

"The punishment will be suspended for 100 days, and during that period, Owen Kai, who has been deprived of his powers and kicked out of the angelic world, must kill the client he saved as part of his punishment. If he manages to do so and shows deep remorse, there will be a retrial to decide on the final sentence. This is the result of the first trial of defendant Owen Kai." The sound of the wooden slab being struck three times echoed throughout the heavens, making the angels as well as the waiting human souls wonder what decision had just been made.

In the next second, the mass of clouds beneath Owen suddenly disappeared, forming a hole, and Owen fell to the earth. Time had returned, and Owen, who had just fallen from the sky, was lying in the middle of the road near the zebra crossing. Behind him a dented truck crashed into the concrete road divider.

Owen tried to open his eyes but to no avail. His head felt dizzy, and he kept hearing a deafening buzzing sound. Not only that, but he also found it difficult to move his body.

'What is this? Why does my body feel like this? What kind of feeling is this?! It's so unpleasant! Shit! Why can't I open my eyes? Let's keep them open!', Owen's mind kept forcing itself.

His determination paid off. His eyes opened slightly, although his vision was blurry. Suddenly he felt his body being shaken, and his vision began to get clearer. He could see the shadow of a woman's face right in front of him.

"Hello, sir! Can you hear me, sir? Can you move? Answer me, sir!" The woman was the one who helped Nora earlier.

"Hey, miss! Where do you think you're going?", The woman asked, turning to Nora, who looked like she wanted to leave quietly.

Nora was stunned, and her tense face relaxed before turning around to show her smile. "My child is fussy, and the scene of the accident is not a good place for a child. So I want to find a safe place for my daughter." Nora replied kindly despite her awkward appearance.

The woman rose to her feet and approached Nora, "He was kind enough to save you. Now is your chance to repay him. The ambulance is here. Please come along to be her guardian."

"Me?" Nora smiled wryly.

Nora and her daughter got into the ambulance, sitting next to Owen, who was lying down. After the first treatment, Owen managed to open his eyes and started to respond, although no sound came out of his mouth yet.

For the first time, Owen and Nora stared at each other. The look in their eyes implied the same thing. Not happy.

'You'd better not hide your wound and get treatment as soon as possible. If your treatment costs more than 500 dollars, then you'd better die!' Nora thought, looking at Owen with a warning look in her eyes.

'You'll see. You'll die in my hands today,' Owen whispered to himself, giving Nora a weak, vengeful stare.
