Elena woke with her body aching everywhere, the sheets tangled around her.
The door opened. Alexander stepped in, sharp suit, cold eyes. He dropped an envelope on the lightstand.
“Two million. As agreed.”
Her fingers curled around the envelope, trembling.
She opened her mouth. “ Thank you, but there’s something… I want to ask—”
“Say it,” he said flatly, studying her.
“I—I want to keep my job. At Knight Enterprises, please.”
Silence. Then, a slow smirk. “Alright. I’ll see you at work today.”
Her heart skipped. She almost thanked him—then panic hit.
“Sam! Oh my God, how did I forget my son.”
She scrambled out of bed, grabbed her bag, and ran out of the room.
Alexander leaned on the doorframe, watching her flee, a low chuckle escaping him. “Cute.” He picked up his phone. “James, take her to City General.”
At the hospital, Elena rushed to the doctor’s office and dropped the envelope on his desk.
“Please,” she begged, voice breaking. “Do the surgery, this is the money, please, save my son.”
The doctor’s eyes widened. He nodded. “Dont worry, mrs. Elena, I’ll call the best of my colleagues. We’ll prepare immediately.”
Elena exhaled in relief and hurried to her son’s room.
Sam’s small eyes lit up when he saw her. “Mommy! Where were you? You didn’t sleep here last night. You didn't stay with me.”
Her heart shattered. She sat on the bed, hugging him tightly. “My angel… mommy’s bad. I’m sorry. But I’m here now, and I’ll always be here.”
He coughed weakly. She wiped his lips and kissed his forehead. “Mummy has to go to work, baby. Just for a little while. Be strong for me, okay?”
“Okay,” he whispered.
She kissed him goodbye and forced herself to walk out as her body ached with pain as she worked out.
Back at the office.
Elena sat at her desk, typing, trying to focus. A shadow fell over her before she could turn to know who it was, a hot dazzling slap landed on her face.
Her head whipped to the side, and the sting burned like hell.
She raised her head, and it was Vanessa.
Her fingers curled around Elena’s arm as she yanked her up from the chair. “Who gave you the audacity to come back here?”
“So you have the mind to disobey me?” the boss’s wife hissed, eyes flashing with rage. “Who even let you in? Because I think you sneaked your way here like a rat!”
Her chest tightened, words stuck in her throat.
Vanessa spun toward the staff, voice sharp as a whip. “And you all—how could you let her work here? Are you out of your minds? I fired her! and you all left her here, dont worry, your salaries will be deducted as a punishment ”
Silence swallowed the office. No one dared to breathe.
Her knees felt weak, but she forced her voice out. “I didn’t sneak in.
The whole office froze as they watched the drama.
