KANE'S POV
After a night of hunting I came to a halt to rest on a tree. I was still a bit far from my home so I decided to rest before continuing my journey. Besides, the air was cool and fresh. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts.
I opened my bag to bring out the remaining food I had left, I was famished. It wasn't a lot but it would suffice.
I felt the cool breeze on my skin and smiled. Peaceful nights like this were hard to come by.
“Ahhhh”. I heard a scream from a distance.
Spoke too soon.
It sounded like a young girl. Probably getting mauled by a bear. Only rogue's roamed the woods at night. That was definitely not a rogue.
I relaxed again, it wasn't my issue. I remember what happened the last time I gave a fuck about another person.
I closed my eyes and tried to rest. I had a long week ahead of me.
You should go check what made that sound
I didn't know if it was my conscience or my wolf that was speaking but I started feeling guilty for not going to check what was wrong.
“It's not my business”. I said and closed my eyes.
I opened my eyes and let out a deep sigh. My mind had already started bugging me. Or maybe it was just curiosity. I headed towards where the sound came from and observed from a tree. It was very quiet. I couldn't sense any rogues. Maybe a false alarm?
Ugh
I was about to turn around when I heard footsteps, they were rogues, and they were approaching a big oak tree.
Strange probably going to catch their prey
Then what was the initial scream for? Did they attack someone prior to this? What would someone even be doing out in the woods by 4am.
One of the rogues climbed the tree, by now I was already invested and sat still to see what would happen next. I got tired and stood up to leave but heard slashing and another loud scream.
It was the same voice from the previous scream.
I looked closely and saw a young girl on the floor with an open wound on her back. The scent of the blood hit my nose immediately, it was…ancient? How was that even possible?
It can't be.
The other rogues surrounded her while their leader held her by the throat.
I don't know why I felt the need to protect her. My blood boiled as the rogue threw her against the tree and jumped on her. I heard another scream and scented her blood being spilled again. My eyes turned silver and rushed to the scene splitting the other two rogues in half with my blade.
They cried out as blood splattered all over the place. I didn't waste time in cutting the last one down.
Pathetic
I looked forward to seeing the frail girl lying almost unconscious. I walked forward and picked her up in my arms. Her body was cold and she was losing a lot of blood. I could feel him trying to catch her breath.
The rogue had bit into her shoulder causing fractures and wounds.
Fuck
She stared at me, as If trying to scan my face or something
What exactly was she doing in the woods by this time
“Who…who are you? Are you here to take me to the afterlife?”. She said with a frail voice.
She shivered and I covered her with a cloth I saw on the ground.
She blacked out a few seconds later and I took her back to the tree where I had been resting before.
I used another cloth to wrap her shoulders and her back to stop the blood from flowing rapidly.
She was weak and severely injured, so I needed to take her back to my home to get some treatment immediately. I put her on my back and jumped from tree to tree increasing my pace with each jump so that I'd reach my home on time.
I could sense her gradually losing her life force.
I had to hurry
I finally got to my home and laid her on the bed. I went outside to prepare herbs and some paste for her wounds. After applying the paste on the wounded areas I waited for her to wake up so that she would drink the brew I made from the herbs.
I stared at her while she slept.
Who are you? Or rather what are you?
I could tell that her wolf was dormant. To anyone else she would be a useless wolf. But I could see beyond that. She was different yet inexperienced. Else she would've been able to hold her own against those rogues.
I sighed.
What have I gotten myself into?
She moved a bit and struggled to open her eyes. She looked around in confusion and then her eyes landed on me.
She was frightened at first, that was understandable. I moved closer to her and her eyes widened.
“Who..who are you?”. She said in a weak tone.
At least she could still talk.
“How do you feel?”. I asked her.
She stared at me strangely and then looked around. She touched her shoulder and winced.
“Don't touch it yet. I applied some paste to the wound, a healer would come by tomorrow to finish the job.”
“Oh… Thank you”
“You're welcome”
“But who are you?.”. She asked again.
“My name is Kane. I'm a rogue. I was out hunting when I heard you scream, so I rescued you and brought you here.”
“Oh.. thank you so much”
“What were you doing out in the woods”
She stared at the ground in silence. “It's uhh… a long story”
“Hmph. Well, you weren't supposed to survive that attack. Truth be told, I saved you because I sensed something in you, something ancient.”
She stared at me in confusion.
“Do you have powers?” I asked
“No, my wolf hasn't fully awakened yet.”. She said with a sad expression.
“What's your name?”. I asked again.
“Elena”. She replied
“Well Elena. You possess something that others would kill for. I give you two choices. Continue as you are now, or allow me train you to become someone who can burn empires to the ground”
She stared at me wide eyed.
“Teach me how to kill”. She said in a whisper.
