If I were to be honest, and I mean brutally honest, my father's life wasn't worth the hassle

It's not that I hate my father but I wouldn't say I loved him either. Pete was just a shadow in my life, always there but present. He was better than Genevieve, though, giving that he was the parent who attended all my school functions and recitals— albeit reluctantly.
