Kyle’s POV
The pancakish face, the hazel eyes, the heavenly body, the honey-like voice of Hilda was all
that was on Kyle’s mind as he sat comfortably, back rested, enjoying the coziness of the elite
restaurant.
He barely comes to places like this, he barely has to impress the other gender, being a pretty
boy himself that wasn’t necessary, but this pretty boy has encountered an even more pretty
obstacle in Hilda. He was patiently waiting for her arrival as he glared at his surrounding like
he was there for some business meeting.
Her pink plum lips was all that was on his mind as he checked his phone hoping for a sign,
he wasn’t exactly sure what he was waiting for.
“I’m almost there”
,
“Give me a minutes”
,
“I’m
at the entrance”
.
He didn’t really mind what exactly it was, he just wanted a sign that he wasn’t waiting in vain,
he already ordered for the both of them, Not because of expenses, that was pretty much
irrelevant at this point, he did it because he thought it’ll be cute, because he thought she
might like it.
He sat at they’re usual spot, they’ve been going there for less than a week and sitting at that
particular spot felt like a lifetime habit already.
“I wonder what she’ll wear today” he muttered to himself as the thoughts ran through his
mind,
“I bet it’s-
“
He couldn’t finish as his eyes caught Hilda’s, Seeing her gaze into his eyes from the
entrance gave him sparkles. It felt like magic.
How can someone be so feminine underneath yet ooze of such dominant aura. She noticed
the look of surrender on his face and let out a slight grin as she made her way to the table,
their usual spot.
The energy has been brewing all night and Kyle was just about to reach its peak.
“You look..You look wonderful..perfect even” He adjusted in his chair as he beheld Hilda’s
heavenly demeanor.
She said nothing, she just blushed at the compliment like it was her norm to receive
compliments like that. She looked down at the spicy pasta he had already ordered for her
with some kind of disgust. He noticed the change in her expression as she fixed her gaze on
the plate. Unsure of what the problem could be, He leaned forward hoping for her to say
something, he was curious about what could have gone wrong.
They had pasta together the previous day, and the day before that, and she seemed to love
it,
“is something wrong, are you okay?” He finally asked as she refused to speak up.
She still said nothing, she kept quiet like he was some kind of servant that didn’t deserved
her words.
Kyle had a short fuse, he knew he got angry easily and he wasn’t proud of it, but when
irritated, his mouth moved faster than his mind, he was a gentleman but couldn’t control his
words when his temper got the best of him.
“You don’t want pasta?” The look on his face became serious, Hilda raised her head and
looked at the plate like it was vomit,
“It’s not about what I want” She looked even more
serious, she looked like she was about to explode.
“You should have waited for me to order
myself!” Kyle’s red face came down when the realization dawned on him.
“Oh, I had no-
“
Hilda interrupted him ,
“What if I didn’t want pasta” Kyle seemed even calmer now, what he
had thought to be a romantic gesture was taken as rude,
“I assumed you’ll love it” Kyle
raised his hand in an effort to signal a waitress standing just across from their table.
“No it’s
fine”
, Hilda exclaimed.
“I’ll just have it like that, it’s no big deal.
”
Kyle wasn’t convinced, he wanted this to be perfect. The Waitress approached their table
with the brightest smile she could muster,
“What can I do for you sir” she asked in the most
polite tone possible. Hilda who clearly said there was no need stared at Kyle like she was
about to swallow him. She then turned at the waitress trying her best to reciprocate the smile
she gave them,
“Never mind, everything is alright here,
”
. The waitress sensed the
awkwardness in the air straightaway,
“I’ll be there if you need anything, enjoy your meal, she
pointed at the counter as she slowly walked away from them.
Hilda who was now leaned in fully picked up her cutleries and rolled a fork full of pasta and
gently brought it towards her mouth like nothing just happened, she kept eating not minding
the unsaid words between them.
The tension grew as Kyle just sat and watched her eat.
“Hmm” She grinned at the tantalizing
taste of the food,
“You’re not going to say anything? He asked lightly feeling something was
still of.
“She gave him a warm and disarming smile,
“The food is okay Kyle.
” The look on her face
made him understand that the tension had melted down a little.
“Pasta this expensive must
definitely be ‘okay’
, haha” he tried to make a joke but she wasn’t feeling it, he grabbed the
glass of wine in front of him and downed it fast like he was in a drinking contest. He brushed
his hand against hers as he dropped the cup but she didn’t flinch.
Hilda gave a tight lipped smile and reached for a napkin on the table, her look remained
constant as he unfolded it with the kind of grace that would tell you she wasn’t pleased.
Kyle caught the look, he knew her well enough by now to sense her mood even before she
spoke. He didn’t say anything instead he grabbed the sparkling water and filled her glass.
“So how was work?” He asked in a very light tone, trying to change the atmosphere.
“It was fine.
” She answered staring down at her food as she continued to devour it.
That was it, no follow up question, no laughter, just silence and cutlery scraping the porcelain
plate.
Being a ladies men, he could tell awkward silences weren’t a good sign, and he liked to
make sure things were always under control, especially with Hilda.
He leaned back in his chair, the words that rose in his throat weren’t pretty, they rarely were
when he gets irritated. But tonight, he bit them down, he had to be different with her, he had
to be better, the golden Hilda, the one everyone said he won’t last with, he was on a date
with her, he wasn’t willing to let her go that easy, he has come way too far.
He cleared his throat.
“The place used to be exciting, now it’s starting to felling like routine,
isn’t it?”
Hilda looked up surprised, she hadn’t expected him to read her mind. Her face softened a
little.
“I didn’t wanna say anything.. but yeah” she said “it’s a big Dejavu.
”
Kyle chuckled “Even what we have feels like Dejavu” He could see the smile he had been
hoping for finally lit up on her face, a genuine one this time.
“But I’m still trying to figure you
out”
He made the surprise on his face really obvious “Figure me out?” She nodded. Twisting her
fork through the pasta,
“I’m trying to see if there’s more to you than heavy cologne and
expensive dates.
”
Kyle laughed out loud as he felt the tension break like a cloud giving way to sunlight, he
stood up and held her hand to help her up without saying a single word.
They walked out of the restaurant like a couple in a movie , close enough to look like more
than friends, but with just enough space between them to still ask “what are we?”
He felt like he got the happy ending he was hoping for, or did he? He got home feeling
fulfilled. The stress of the day took a toll on him and the date took its own. He stepped into
his living room and loosed his shirt as he collapsed on the couch, letting his head fall back.
He heard his phone buzz and picked it up. Hilda left a message.
“You are so stingy, the
same restaurant everyday, He sat up and the sleepiness in his eyes cleared instantly.
He read it again to make sure he wasn’t seeing wrong, rage flooded his head like a rising
wave, silent at first, then crushing so loudly on his head he had to drop the phone first to
avoid throwing it. Before he could think of the next step to take, his phone buzzed again and
another message appeared on his screen,
“Even my ex wasn’t this useless.
”
He didn’t know what to think, he wasn’t sure what he was feeling, the undeniable anger that
made him feel like his brain was boiling and the suffocating grief that made him feel like his
heart was melting.
He stared at his phone not knowing what to type, the grief dominated the anger, he felt more
sad and furious, his head was blank so he dropped the phone and planned to talk to her the
next day.
__
“I WILL KILL YOU” Kyle screamed as he saw Hilda walk into the reception office the next
day.
Everyone gasped in shock and fear at the weight of his words. Kyle worked towards her with
a confidence even him didn’t know he had.
