“I know you’re a dangerous man, Diego.”

Mom’s voice was soft but firm as he knelt and gently took her hand. She coughed once, then went on, “I don’t care if you’re dangerous—just don’t be dangerous to Carlotta and can you promise me that you’ll look after my girls, Diego?”

“You don’t have to worry about that.”

Mom sighed and relaxed a little. “Okay then,” she whispered, as if ready to drift off.
