“W…what?” Carlotta blinked, clearly stunned.

Dad kept mumbling under his breath, caught in his own spiral of denial. More protests. More rejection. My heart felt like it was shattering all over again, but I blinked back my tears and turned toward Carlotta.

“I know this is a lot to take in—”

“It’s not a shock!” Dad suddenly shouted, cutting me off. His voice cracked with rage and desperation. “It’s not a shock, because it’s not true!”
