When we emerged from the maze, I spied Elena and Ravi on the other side of the lawn. The two of them were kicking a ball back and forth across the grass.

“Ravi!” I called, even though my head was reeling with new doubt. “Come over here. There’s someone I want you to meet.”

He ran over to me and promptly hid behind my back when he noticed Carlotta standing there. “Guess what, kiddo?” I said in the calmest voice I could muster. “This is your Auntie Lotta.”
