Something shivered through her eyes when she brought it up. It passed too fast for me to catch what it might be.

My gut churned. I knew this was coming, of course, but it was so much worse than I expected. Maybe because Carlotta seemed so set on staying distant. Her face was perfectly composed. Her hands were neatly folded on the table. She was the picture of calm.
