My eyes almost popped out of their sockets. “I’m not a dog that you can train to come to heel,” I growled, stabbing my finger into his chest. “You’re not my master!”

I moved to bypass him, but he slid over and I collided with his rock-solid chest. He was so unyielding that I’d have tumbled off the curb if he hadn’t caught me by the elbow. He let go as soon as I steadied, but the afterburn of his fingers on my bare skin lingered.
