Chapter 157.Kael's Farewell to Power.

Kael’s POV.

I wake on election day with strange clarity. After three months of campaigning, today the pack decides. I've done what I can. Run honestly. Proposed real change. Encouraged other candidates.

Now it's out of my hands. That should terrify me. Instead, I feel calm. I stand at my window overlooking Blackridge as I have for twelve years. The city has changed. So have I.

The council hall was rebuilt, more open, less imposing. New systems are in place. A pack learning to question. I'm not the same Alpha who rejected Mira. Who trusted blindly. Who held power like a weapon.

Three candidates ran. Me. Rowan Ashford, a young warrior advocating complete reform. Elder Sofia, pushing traditional hierarchy. I genuinely don't know who'll win. Genuinely okay with any outcome.

That realization surprises me most. I want to win. But I don't need to. The assembly gathers in the rebuilt city center. The entire pack is witnessing. Marcus stands beside me. "Whatever happens, you did the right thing."

"We'll see if the pack agrees." Mira and Lyra watch from the crowd. Lyra waves tentatively. I nod back. "In the first democratic election for Alpha of Blackridge Pack..."

Silence. Complete. Breathless. "Rowan Ashford has been elected Alpha with 46% of the vote."

The words hit. I lost. After twelve years, I'm no longer Alpha. "Kael Thorne received 38%. Elder Sofia received slightly. The crowd erupts. Cheers. Gasps. Celebration. Disappointment. I wait for devastation. For anger. For humiliation.

Instead, I feel relief. Profound, surprising relief. The burden lifts. The responsibility passes. I'm free. Before anyone can speak, I walk to the center platform. The crowd quiets.

This moment defines my legacy as much as my twelve years of rule. I choose grace. "I want to be the first to congratulate Alpha-elect Rowan Ashford." I turn to him, extend my hand. He takes it, overwhelmed. "You ran strong. You offered the vision that this pack needs. You earned this victory."

"I've served as your Alpha for twelve years. Some decisions I'm proud of. Many I regret." "I rejected my mate, thinking it was duty. It was cowardice." "I trusted the wrong people, thinking it was wisdom. It was complacency."

"I held power tightly, thinking it was strength. It was fear." I look at Mira. At Lyra. At Marcus. "But I learned. Thanks to people who challenged me."

Find my place as a citizen." Applause begins. Tentative, then building. Rowan steps forward, visibly emotional. "Alpha Kael, your concession demonstrates why many still voted for you."

"You could have contested. You could have made this difficult." "Instead, you chose grace. That sets a precedent I'll strive to follow." "I ask that you remain during the transition. Not as Alpha, but as advisor."

I consider. "I'll stay for the transition. After that... I'll see." Rowan turns to the pack. "I ran on continued reform. That promise stands."

"More transparency. More accountability. More voices." He asks me to stand beside him. "The transition begins now, but it's a transition, not a rupture." We stand together. Old Alpha and new. Tradition and change. Side by side.

Later, I retreat to my quarters. No longer the Alpha's quarters. Just temporary housing. I start packing immediately. Marcus finds me. "I've served you for twelve years. That doesn't end because you lost an election."

"You're not my Beta anymore, Marcus. You're Rowan's, if he wants you." "He's asked me to stay. I said yes." He pauses. "But my loyalty to you doesn't transfer. It adds." I nod, grateful for the distinction. "How do you really feel?" I sit heavily. "Relieved. Surprisingly, overwhelmingly relieved."

"I thought I'd feel diminished. Instead, I feel lighter." "Maybe I'll stay and just be a citizen. Figure out who Kael is when he's not Alpha."

"That sounds terrifying. But also, necessary." Mira visits later, Lyra with her. They've stayed in Blackridge; Lyra's sentence is five years supervised service. "You handled that well. The concession. The grace."

"I meant it. Rowan will be good for Blackridge."

"Better than you?"

"Different than me. Less burdened by the past. Maybe that's what 'better' looks like." Lyra speaks up, still uncertain. "You told me to stay and face consequences. You did that today."

"Was it hard? Losing?"

"Yes. But losing honestly is better than winning through manipulation." I look at her directly. "You taught me that."

"Thank you. For making me face my own hypocrisy."

"You made me face mine. So, we're even."

It's not friendship. Not family. But an honest connection. That's enough. "What will you do now?" Mira asks. "I don't know. First time in twelve years I can say that."

"That must be strange."

"Strange. And freeing."

Elder Sofia approaches later, stiff but respectful. "I still think democracy is chaos."

"But chaos done honorably is better than order maintained through corruption." But there's the hint of a smile. One week later, there will be a formal transition ceremony. We're creating tradition as we go. "I, Kael Thorne, relinquish the position of Alpha."

"I transfer authority, responsibility, and trust to Rowan Ashford, chosen by this pack." "May he lead with wisdom. May you guide him with honesty." Simple. Direct. Final. Rowan responds. "I, Rowan Ashford, accept the position of Alpha."

"I pledge to serve, not rule. To listen, not dictate. To lead with transparency." Instead of ceremonial items, I hand him a bound book. History of Blackridge, successes and failures, documented honestly. "Learn from what came before. But don't be bound by it." The pack responds with a unified howl. I join the howl. No longer as Alpha, but as a pack member.

The sound is mine, but not mine alone. Part of something larger. I finish clearing my quarters. Twelve years reduced to a few boxes. I keep a photo of my father. The Alpha before me, who ruled traditionally.

Wonder what he'd think of this democratic transition. Disappointment? Pride? I'll never know. I wrote him a letter, never to be sent. "You taught me being Alpha meant control. You were wrong."

"Or maybe you were right for your time, and I'm right for mine." I burn the letter. Some conversations are just for the writing.

I decide to stay in Blackridge. Small dwelling, not the Alpha's residence. I'll find work. Maybe training warriors. Maybe something different. I'll learn to be Kael. Not Alpha Kael. Just Kael. My last morning in the Alpha's quarters. Rowan moves in today.

I walk through Blackridge carrying my boxes. No ceremony. No fanfare. Wolves see me. Some nod. Some ignore me. Some look confused. I'm just another wolf now. No title. No special treatment.

My new place is small. Single room. Basic furnishings. Near the city edge. But it's mine. Chosen. Not assigned by rank. A knock. Rowan stands there, looking uncertain. "Is this appropriate? I don't want to intrude."

"It's fine. Come in."

"I wanted to ask, are you okay? Really?" I consider. "I am. Surprisingly. I thought I'd feel lost without the role."

"And you don't?"

"I feel free, please."

"Don't do what I did. Don't let the role consume the person."

"You're Alpha Rowan. But you're also just Rowan. Don't lose him in the title." "Thank you. For stepping down gracefully. For making this possible." "Thank you for winning. For taking this burden. For being brave enough to try." We clasp forearms. Two wolves who respect each other. Then he leaves. And I'm alone in my new life.

I sit in my small room as the sun sets. Twelve years as Alpha ended in a democratic choice. I lost. And somehow, that feels like winning. Who is Kael Thorne without the Alpha title?

My city, but not mine to lead anymore. Life continuing. Without me at the center. Instead of hurt, it feels like permission to finally rest. I unpack slowly. A photo goes on the shelf, me with Marcus, laughing.

Another, the rebuilt council hall. Symbol of change. I don't put up anything from my Alpha years. Those are behind me. Freed from power. Learning to be myself. And that's enough. More than enough. It's everything
