Chapter 19 – Building the Farm

Chen Yun headed straight for the farm sector.

The farm area was enormous—almost half of the second underground level. Over a thousand square meters of empty space stretched out before him.

He stepped into the center of the chamber and gave a light wave of his hand. In an instant, the bare floor was filled with a jumble of alloy brackets, decking, fasteners, LED grow lights, PVC tubing, and other assorted components.

Taking a deep breath, a three‑dimensional blueprint for a vertical cultivation rack materialized in his hand. Following the assembly instructions, Chen Yun grabbed the nearest alloy parts and began to put the rack together.

The system’s reinforcement function couldn’t turn raw materials into finished products on its own—just as cement and sand can’t magically become a house. A basic framework had to exist first; only then could the reinforcement be applied.

So Chen Yun had to construct the rack’s skeleton himself before he could spend additional resources to strengthen it.

Fortunately, the rack was simple to assemble. He only needed to locate the correct pieces and snap them together.

Before long, two racks were fully built.

The rack on his left had four levels, spaced a meter apart. The one on his right boasted ten levels, spaced half a meter apart. The four‑tier rack would grow staple grains like rice and wheat; the ten‑tier rack was intended for vegetables.

Chen Yun planned to split the thousand‑plus square meters of farm space‑wise: 700 m² for crops and 300 m² left vacant for future animal husbandry once energy supplies were abundant.

The 700 m² would be further divided into a 300 m² grain zone and a 400 m² vegetable zone.

“By actual planting area, that’s roughly 4,000 m² of vegetable space and 1,200 m² of grain space,” Chen Yun calculated in his head.

“If we double‑crop the grains, the annual yield would feed one person for ten years!”

“But such a setup would be a massive energy drain. Solve the power problem, and the food issue disappears completely…”

After a long pause, he raised his hands and placed them on the two racks. He projected a light panel and tapped [Reinforce].

[Detected vertical farming rack components and other materials.

Consume these materials to apply targeted reinforcement?]

[Reinforcement type: Expansion.]

[Required Survival Points: 200.]

“Proceed,” Chen Yun whispered mentally.

[Reinforcement confirmed. Consuming 200 Survival Points.]

[Reinforcing…]

A progress bar flickered across the two racks. When it filled, the racks and the surrounding scrap vanished.

[Reinforcement successful!]

The chamber was no longer empty. On the left, rows of silvery‑white alloy frames rose up to six meters, as if sprouting from the walls and floor, their bases deeply embedded in the dark‑gray walls. Each level bore a smooth, silver cultivation platform bathed in the soft glow of overhead LED panels. The platforms’ channels and drainage holes were clearly visible. Most of the structure was four‑tier, with a smaller portion extending to ten tiers.

On the right, a lattice of white tubes of varying thickness criss‑crossed the space. Evenly spaced ports opened along the tubes, each fitted with neatly arranged planting cup connectors. A main circulation line ran toward the central area of the farm.

LED arrays on the ceiling poured uniform, bright light over everything, making the whole farm as bright as day.

In the middle of the 700 m² planting zone, the dark‑gray floor rose slightly, forming a half‑foot high platform. Massive storage tanks, monitoring consoles, and circulating water pumps were securely mounted on this base. Complex pipe interfaces automatically extended, seamlessly linking into the newly formed tubing network and the pre‑installed water supply hookups.

Chen Yun stepped forward, his fingers brushing the cool alloy frames, then gliding over the smooth tubing. “These systems are no worse than any professional farm,” he remarked with a smile.

Satisfied with the now‑functional farm, he nodded. The hardware was in place; he only needed to learn aquaponics and soil‑free cultivation before he could start sowing.

After a quick stretch, he switched off the farm’s lights and made his way to the last room on the second underground level—the waste processing area.

As the name implied, the waste zone handled household trash and wastewater. Living inevitably generates both, but indiscriminate dumping or dumping into the environment is risky and unsustainable. Proper waste and water treatment, therefore, was critical.

Chen Yun summoned three compact incinerators and two small wastewater processors from the storage space. Placing his hands on the incinerators and processors, he selected [Reinforce].

[Consume other incinerators and wastewater processors to perform a comprehensive reinforcement on the selected units?]

[Required Points: 400.]

[Insufficient Points.]

He frowned. “I didn’t track point usage—only 162 points left.”

“Looks like a wait‑until‑tonight’s point settlement before I can continue.”

He checked his phone: it was past three o’clock.

“Alright, that’s enough for today. Time to get some sleep,” he muttered, heading back to the old house above. After a quick wash, he collapsed onto his bed and fell into a deep slumber.

The next morning Chen Yun rose early. After a light bite, he stepped into the courtyard. He retrieved a length of hose from storage, attached one end to the outdoor faucet, and ran the other down to the basement water‑source area, connecting it to the inlet of the filtration system.

He turned the faucet on. June was peak farming season; crops needed weeding and watering, and most households were drawing heavily on the municipal supply. Low pressure and occasional shut‑offs were common. The on‑site storage tank held a hundred tons of water, so filling it would take a while. Starting that day, he began slowly accumulating water.

Aside from filling the tank, Chen Yun had no other tasks. He spent the day indoors, poring over manuals and articles about greenhouse cultivation and hydroponics.

Evening came, and he lounged on the sofa, watching the clock on the wall inch toward midnight.

[Ping!]

[Daily point settlement initiated.]

[Processing…]

[Base points earned today: 24.]

[Survival assessment: Base construction – 500 points.]

[Settlement complete. Current Survival Points balance: 684.]

“Five hundred points,” he murmured. “Today’s settlement was better than yesterday.”

Without overthinking, he stood, returned to the waste processing area on the second underground level, and placed his hands on the incinerator and wastewater processor once more.

“Six‑eighty‑four points—enough to finish the initial base construction today,” he thought, ready to push forward.
