"Mother, what are you doing here?" Dominic said, after a long awkward stretch of silence. The air suddenly felt too tight, like the room itself was holding its breath.

His mother lazily dragged her eyes away from me, without a word and spoke to her son.

"I live here? Or did you forget?" she asked in a clipped tone that put me on edge.

"Of course not." Dominic said and reached for my hand, "Well, Evelyn is here. She's safe after all."
