The line progressed forward like a snail, and I tapped my foot impatiently against the pavement. I had better things to do and yet here I was.

The loud shouts and laughter from the rides grated on me instead of making me feel entertained. I wasn’t really here for fun. I was here because Haven insisted that I do something for her birthday.

“Wait for me,” she said, brushing hair out of her face before walking toward a nearby stall. “I’ll grab us drinks.”
