The morning sickness came first. At first, I thought it was hunger, another symptom of the endless shortages. My stomach twisted in strange ways, and food repulsed me. The smell of dried meat made bile rise in my throat, and mornings became unbearable, as if my body itself were rebelling against the fact that I was still alive.

Then the realization kicked in, I had experienced a similar thing when I was with Aiden’s child.

I was pregnant.
