Evelyn did not remember how long she stayed on the floor after Damian left. It was like time had stopped moving, it stretched, warped, dissolved into something shapeless and cruel, leaving her trapped inside moments that refused to pass. She sat beside Jayden’s crib with her back pressed against the wood, her knees drawn to her chest, her fingers digging into the fabric of her dress as if holding on tightly enough might stop everything from falling apart.
