Felicia’s hands were still trembling long after Damian hung up.

She hated that he heard it, hated how her voice shook, how she stuttered through a simple “I’ll make sure everything is ready.” She knew exactly why he’d paused, why his tone sharpened.

“Is everything alright?” he had asked.

She had forced herself to say “Yes, absolutely” but she knew he didn’t buy it.
