Rain’s eyes widened, the color draining from her face, and I tilted my head, savoring every drop of her panic.

“Well, well…” I purred, my hand still on the book leaning over the heavy oak table where she sat frozen. “What are you up to, Rain?”

She fumbled, her hands flying over the open pages as if ink could be erased with trembling fingers. The desperation was almost amusing.
