The promises

Nova POV

My breath hitched and for a moment,I forgot to breathe. I closed my eyes and opened them again just to make sure I wasn't in some kind of a bad dream. The reality of the situation hit me hard.

“ Did I just hear you say…”

“ Yes, Nova. You heard me right. Don't start with your theatrics.” Chase snapped in irritation, cutting me off. I sat there in a daze as my mind digested everything.

“ I'm tired of pretending that I am happy in this marriage. This is not what I signed for.” Chase added. I felt bile rise from the depths of my stomach but I held it in, swallowing the bitter lump.

I turned to look at Delilah who had a smug smile on her face.

“ I want to be with her. She makes me happy and that's why I am suggesting something that will work for all of us.” Chase continued to explain. I felt anger surge inside me as I listened to his words.

“ What works for us? Why don't you say what works for you. This is not what we promised each…”

“ Fuck those promises,Nova! This is the life I want. I don't want to be with a woman who doesn't know how to excite a man in bed. All you do is lay on your god-damn back and count stars. How the fuck do you think a man will stay with such a woman. It's just boring and I have had enough of it. Delilah is everything i want in a woman." Chase declared and looked proud of himself for saying that. He turned to look at Delilah who shamelessly kissed his lips.

My stomach churned as I realised the implications of my husband's words.

" Are you admitting to cheating on me with my personal assistant? You've been going behind my back to fuck another woman. How dare you, Chase!" I growled in anger. Chase looked unbothered by my little outburst. He appeared nonchalant, like he didn't just acknowledge being a cheating bastard.

" So what if I have been fucking Delilah. I am a man,Nova and I have needs. Needs which you are clearly unable to satisfy. If you are unable to meet my demands, then it's only fair for me to find other options." Chase answered calmly.

Those words felt like a dagger being driven and twisted in my heart.

I took a deep breath and tried to calm my raging nerves. No matter how angry I was,I wasn't going to act like a wench and make a scene. I wasn't going to give them the satisfaction of seeing me break down.

" Is this what you want?" I asked in a calm tone. Chase seemed taken back by my reaction. Maybe he expected me to throw a fit or curse at him. Delilah remained with that smug look, the kind that screamed victory. Only that I wasn't going to let her win.

Chase nodded.

" Then we are getting a divorce. If you want to screw around, you can do that but without me tied to your name."

A dark chuckle followed by declaration. I turned to look at Chase who was now smiling at me,an evil glint in his eyes.

" Are you sure about that? Don't think for a moment I'll let you walk away with the company, woman. If we are divorcing, you leave with nothing." Chase declared. My eyes widened with shock. He didn't just say that, right?

" I started that company with my savings." I shouted,my anger spiking up. Chase chuckled.

" The company is registered under me and that investment was made in my name. Do you think anyone will buy your one -sided story?"

I looked at Chase as he sat there, his cunning gaze piercing me and I wondered if I truly knew the man I was married to for six years.

" This was your plan all along,Chase. You've carefully planned every step on how to steal my company." I couldn't believe I was so dumb to not realize shit.

When I started the company,I wanted to build my own name and not rely on my family name. Chase convinced me to register the company under his name. I trusted him. I mean,we were married and I believed that everything was for our future. When the company started growing,he convinced me to make him the CEO of the company. He would be the face of the company and me? I worked behind the scenes, managing everything. I then realised that it was all a calculated move to take control over my company and threaten me into submission.

" She is not that dumb after all. Took her long though." Delilah commented besides Chase.

I turned to look at her with a glare on my face. " I thought I could trust you, Delilah. You teamed up with him to betray me? And for what? For a man who doesn't respect women, not even his wife?" I questioned her. Six years ago, she was a nobody. I still remembered how she came begging for a job.I took her under my wings and trained her. And this is how she saw fit? To betray me?

" It's up to you,Nova. Agree to my proposal or lose the company." Chase declared and took Delilah's hand.

" By the way, your husband loves back shots." She whispered as she passed me.

At the door, Chase paused and turned to look at me.

“ Just so we can be clear,Nova. I never loved you.” Chase declared.

“ I chased after you because it seemed like every man in our circle wanted you. That's why I married you. I did it to prove to all of them that I was better.” Chase confessed. His words made me feel sick to the stomach. So,I was the only one stupidly in love all these years?

I watched as the two people I trusted the most strutted away like they didn't just shatter my world.

My vision blurred as tears streamed down my cheeks. The brave face I put on earlier crumbled and I broke down.

After what felt like forever, I gathered myself and left the terrace. I walked out of the hotel and walked down the streets absentmindedly. I felt numb inside. There was a time I thought I had it all. A husband who loved me,a place to call home and a business I built with my sweat and blood.

That night,I lost it all. My husband mocked me for not being enough for him and compared me with another woman. The home I called ours,I didn't know if I could step insíde without breaking down. And my company,it hung on a line. I didn't know the extent Chase was willing to go to fulfil his threat.

I didn't know how long I walked aimlessly. When I regained my senses, what greeted my eyes was bold neon lights flickering around a name.

Without as much as a second thought,I strolled to the building. I didn't miss how the guards at the door stared at me,like I was a clown.

I made my way inside, the loud music blaring through the speakers. The air smelled of alcohol, perfume, sin and latex.

I ignored everything and made my way to the bar. I was here for one thing in particular–alcohol.

“ Give me the strongest you have.” I instructed the bartender who gave me a second glance filled with pity before he resumed his work.

A moment later,I had my drink in hand. Taking a long sip,my face scrunched up as the scorching liquid burned my palate.

“ Nova? What are you doing here?” A familiar voice asked from behind me. Turning around,I met dark bottomless orbs staring back at me. I felt goosebumps scattered through my body when I recognised him. Roman West – my husband's brother.

He looked like the typical him–the perfect defination of sin, temptation and bad decisions.

My eyes scanned his body –tall and all muscles with tats peeking underneath his white shirt.

“ You look ravishing and homeless.” He commented, checking me out. My cheeks burned with embarrassment. I tried to say something but Roman cut me off.

“ Where is your little husband? Does he know you are here,in my turf?”
