I jolted awake with a violent start, my heart slamming against my ribs as a deafening explosion echoed somewhere in the distance. The sound rattled the windows and vibrated through the floorboards. Disoriented, I spun around in bed, my hand instinctively reaching for the chair beside me only to find it empty.

Knowing that Selene was no longer in the room, panic flared instantly. “Selene?” I called out, my voice hoarse from sleep. “Selene!”
