The storm is merciless. It lashes at me with sheets of rain so heavy I can barely see. My gown clings like a second skin, dragging at my legs, my heels slipping on the slick pavement. Each step feels like drowning on dry land.

I don’t know this part of Paris. The buildings tower over me, faceless and cold, their glowing windows too far away to matter. My wolf paces inside me, agitated, restless. Let me out, she urges. We can find shelter. We can fight.
