Chapter 49

Chance

The roar of the bike rumbles under me as I ride hard and fast down the long narrow street. What would normally take me a good forty-five minutes, is now going on fifteen. The roads are slippery and still damp from the small snow we got this morning, but I let nothing stop me as I rush to my target.

My bike speeds down the suburban neighborhood, car alarms go off as I pass them, but my focus is on one thing and one thing only.

Abby.

Normally the road keeps my mind free of conflict and aggression, but not tonight. Tonight, my anxious form is hunting, and my bike is merely a means to an end.

I can still remember the day I met Abby. Austin was giving me a tour of what would be my new home within the Nightmare Warriors compound. I was done with life, ready for it to take me away. I had hit rock bottom and wanted nothing, but something in her called to me. Some kind of deep darkness that she tried hiding behind the depths of her blue eyes, but I saw right through it. Only certain people who have experienced a kind of loss could. She was despondent. No life shined within her eyes, but that doesn't mean she was ready to give in. Her long blonde hair and bright blue eyes were still full of resolve, just not for herself. She survived for others.

"They have her. They have Abby."

Bone's words come rushing to me as I slow my bike to a stop at the familiar house. They have Abby, and it won't take a fucking genius to know who or why. We have made an enemy, something I knew would happen and still left her unprotected. I should have done more, but I don't have time to beat myself up, now is the time for me to get ahead of the game.

The mid-size sedan comes to a stop as I get right behind it. I watch as the red brake lights go off and wait for her to get out of her car. We have been watching her for more than six months, since the day we found out Alberts disappeared after kidnapping Lyla and her daughter.

Hoping off my bike, I grab the gun in my back pocket and take the few steps up the driveway. Christmas decor surrounds me as I tap on the window with the butt of the gun and wait for her to make up her mind of what she wants to do.

I can see her turn and say something to the kids in the back seats and I close my eyes with dread. I didn't want to do this in front of them, but they have put me in a desperate way. I will do anything to get Abby back.

I watch as the window rolls down a few inches and keep the gun in my right hand but lower it to my waist.

"P-please. I-I don't know where he is." She whispers and it takes everything in me not to scream and pull her out by her hair.

"Get out of the car." I shout through my teeth attempting to rein in my anger.

You have to stay calm for Abby. She needs you Chance.

"P-please, you don't understand. I didn't know who he truly was. He kept himself hidden from me and the boys."

"Won't tell you again Joanna. Get the fuck out of the car, now." This time I raise the run and aim it at her. I need her, need her information. I know she isn't lying about Alberts whereabouts. The moment that fucker became chief of police and began causing problems for our club, we had him looked into. Torque, out tech guru, couldn't find much on him, but we know he is married with two boys. As far as we knew, he never told his family about his secret life of crime, violence, and murder.

Abby he has Abby.

The thought nearly causes me to lose my footing.

Joanna Alberts gets out of the car with her hands up and I keep my gun focused on her back. Just because she doesn't know where her husband is, doesn't mean she doesn't know where he might be. Austin explained that he wanted to go on the offense, this is exactly the first place we should have looked.

"Listen, you're one of the Nightmare Warriors, right? You're a part of that club that my husband was trying to take down?" She says blowing out a breath, causing the condensation to show. It's cold outside, but I can't feel anything, just my mission of getting Abby back home, safe and sound.

"I need a list of where he might be."

"I already gave the FBI everything I had." I blink a few times at the news of the FBI being involved. "I had no idea my husband was that kind of man, but now that I do, I have nothing to do with him. I kicked him out when he came home after speaking with the FBI and haven't seen him since. It's been months.

"You think I give a fuck about your fucking marital status? I want places of where he would go, people he knew, everything. And you're going to fucking give it to me."

"P-please, I don't know anything. Honest. There were no places we had in our names, or vacation spots we frequented. We didn't have the money for things like that."

"Look bitch, you're wasting my time here. I need you to?" Cold metal stops my sentence as I feel the familiar feel of a gun being pointed at me. I lower my gun and turn to face Max as he stands behind me.

"Put the gun away brother. We don't do shit like this."

"She may know something Max. We can't just let her go. Abby needs us to find her. You know it's Alberts that has her. So maybe we should start doing shit like this."

"Abby wouldn't want this and you know it Chance. Put the gun away. Not going to ask you again." He says, pushing the gun further into my chest. I lower the gun to the ground and turn back to Joanna.

"She's going to get away, and you will be the one to blame when we find Abby's body." I can feel Max's burning gaze on my back, but he ignores my jab at him.

"Get in your car and get the fuck out of here. If you tell anyone about this, we will find you and kill you, slowly." Joanna nods her head hysterically at Max's orders, then hops in her, starts it back up, and takes off without looking back.

The moment I hear Max's gun go back into his jeans, I lean back and attempt to punch him in the face, but the soldier in him kicks in and moves away from my punch, then puts me on my ass with a fist to the face. I land on my back and look up at the night sky as I feel a bruise forming around my chin instantly.

"You're not weak Chance. We've fought before and it's always been even. The reason you couldn't win a fight now, is the same reason you shouldn't be out here waving guns at innocents. You're head ain't in it. Just your heart. And right now, she needs both brother. Now get on your bike and get your ass home."

Max walks across the street and hops on his Harley, fires it up and looks back at me as I lay on the ground. "I can't lose her Max. I can't lose her. not to him. not like this." Tears threaten behind my eyes, but I push them down.

"Then get on and get your ass home. She's counting on us."
