My phone rang, loud and sudden, cutting through my tangled emotions.

I paused, my trembling hand reaching into my bag to grab it. My fingers shook so badly that I accidentally pressed the power button too hard. The phone shut off by itself.

I pulled the phone out, but it was too late. I couldn't see who had been calling.
