"Your name?"he asked.
It took a while before I could find my words "Adele"I replied.
"Adele"he repeated as though he was trying to digest the name.
I fell on my knees at once "Please pardon me. I just want to go back to my family. I didn't mean to disobey or be a rebel. I was just lost in thoughts I forgot to move along with the queue. Please spare me. Please" I cried out, my eyes already clouded with tears.
"Do you think, I would harm you?"he asked.
I was left speechless by his question. I didn't even know what exactly he was going to do to me.
"I believe you are kind sir and you would let me go"that was a lie. Nothing seemed kind about him.
Up until that moment, he had been facing away from me, staring at the wall. I watched him turn and walk towards me, and I couldn't help but notice how tall he was but not huge. His skin was dark and he didn't seem intimidating like I had thought before, despite his height and perfect physique.
"Get up!"he ordered.
I did so immediately and bowed my head refusing to look at him. Surprisingly, apart from everything, his face was pleasing to look at, was welcoming but held no emotions. He didn't exuded an air of calm but I oddly felt at ease that moment. His eyes met mine, and for a moment, it was as if we were the only two people in the room. Actually we were.
"I want you to work with me"he stated.
My eyes widened instantly "What?! I just want to go back to my family please"I cried.
"What are those in the bag?"he asked pointing to the bag I had been holding.
I looked at him in confusion. He ran this environment, why would he ask for what he owns.
"Drugs"I replied hesitantly
"Who put you up to it?"
"My little brother got kidnapped by some bandits in Vegas"I began to narrate "They wanted me for a mission, so that was their only way. I have to get my brother back, so you have to let me go"I explained in hope of release.
"Your brother will live"he noted "We start work by tomorrow. Be up early. 7:30am" he mentioned and made to walk away but I held him.
"My brother will live? How?" I asked.
"Leave it to me. I will have your family relocated to a safer place, all you need to do is work for me"he answered.
"I do not want to owe anyone. Especially not you" I stubbornly mentioned still in tears.
"Then your brother may not see the light of tomorrow"he replied calmly more like he was threatening me but he was actually stating the hard truth.
"Are you the person behind everything? You had the bandits kidnap my brother?"I quickly asked before he could leave.
"I didn't"he responded.
"Then why are you doing this to me?"
"Because you, you...." he paused "Cypher"he suddenly called out. A guard quickly rushed into the room "Take her to the room. Guard it securely and make sure she doesn't leave. Give her anything she wants and make sure she is comfortable"he instructed.
"Yes sir"the guard replied.
He looked at me "I will make sure your family is in safe hands. Do not bother turning down the offer. It's not voluntary, it's compulsory"he said and finally left.
"Wait please"I called in tears. Although, he paid deaf ears to me.
"Let's go"the guard gripped me immediately and I was too broken to even think again. Just in one day, my life had dangerously changed. I couldn't believe.
We walked out of the black and white painted hall and took a turn that led us to a very fancy environment, excluded from the environment we were in before. This place looked like where the elites lived. This was were the bosses of the drug camp based in. The street was finely lit, it smelled of luxury and it looked like trouble. Why did their boss decide to keep me in such beautiful area. We walked into one of the buildings and we took the elevator, unluckily, Kelas was in that same elevator.
"We meet again" he had the country side accent but didn't look like one. "I will take her from here" he turned to the Cypher .
"I'm sorry Kelas. Not today"Cypher said.
"And why is that?"
"Kodak"was all he replied and Kelas didn't say any other word. He alighted the elevator at the third floor and we continued to the top floor.
The room I was to stay was by the left side of the long corridor at the top floor. Cypher unlocked the doors and before I could even say a word, he pushed me in and locked it.
"Wait!"I banged the door but got no reply and best knew I had to be quiet. The room was lit already, large, functional and very costly. It was the typical elite structured room. I took a moment to look around it, taking in its grandeur and luxury with all the amenities one could want. But it was the wardrobe that caught my eye. It was filled with clothes of every kind - suits, dresses, jeans, and more. There were shoes and accessories galore, and even a section devoted to hair care products. I felt a bit overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff, and I began to wonder what kind of job he wanted me to do.
I went back to the bed and laid down frailly, the air conditioner felt new to my skin, the softness of the bed was extremely nice and everything just felt extreme for just one day. The window was slightly open and the curtain raised, so I had a slight feeling of freedom equally with breeze whooshing in. I saw the door opening and I stood from the bed nervously. Cypher walked in with a tray containing my dinner.
"Boss orders, eat up, shower and go to bed" he said while dropping the tray.
"And you? Will you be here all night to guard me?"I asked and he nodded, then slowly left.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to eat the sumptuous meal prepared for me. What if it was poisoned or it was trap?
I knew I needed to take a shower but I was too scared to do anything. These people could easily take my life, I had to be cautious. I stood by the window as I just loved the feel of the breeze on my skin but when I looked ahead, I saw a dark skinned guy in a room far in the opposite twin building across the tarred street. He was taking off his shirt. I wanted to look away but I couldn't. He picked up a glass of wine from his table and sipped it. My stare got intense and I wondered why I kept staring, till he turned and it turned out that it was the boss. Oh Lord!
My legs couldn't move and I stood still. With a smirk on his face, he rested by the window and began staring back at me. I loved how his hair was a neat low cut brunette and how curly it looked. I had always loved the feel of blacks' hair, especially the best and healthy ones. It was always thick and full. He had no beards, His chin was clean and smooth. He looked really young, perhaps about thirty or thirty one. He sipped from his wine again and I knew I had to stop staring, I quickly got away from the window and locked it. I couldn't take any chances of thinking that he was handsome. No, he was wicked, he was heartless. And I wanted to leave here.
Again and again, the alarm on the bedside table buzzed, until I could no longer ignore it. I sprang up from the bed, feeling groggy and disoriented. I wasn't sure how long I had been asleep, but the sunlight streaming through the window told me it was now morning. I walked over to the alarm and turned it off, I was starting to feel a bit more awake, but I still had no idea what time it was or what I was supposed to be doing. Until I came back to my senses and realized the time.
"8:00??? Oh my God!"I panicked. Without hesitation, I hurried into the bathroom and had my bath in jiffy and then picked out a blue jean and yellow top from the wardrobe, put it on and packed my hair in a ponytail. I had slept so comfortably that I forgot someone actually owned me henceforth.
I hurried to the door and Cypher was just coming in with a tray filled with breakfast. He saw the dinner on the table untouched and his brows creased.
"You didn't eat last night?"he asked.
"Is it compulsory to eat too?"I retorted
"It's the bosses order. You don't disobey"
"Or what?"I snapped frustratingly.
"Or you suffer the consequences"this was a new voice. It was the boss who had just walked in.
