The room Lyra shared with Nessa was quiet compared to the roaring celebration outside. Lyra sat on the edge of the bed, staring into space, when Vera walked in, uninvited.

“Well, look at you,” Vera said, laughing softly. “Still sulking while the rest of us celebrate.”

“I won,” Vera continued. “But I feel pity for you. You don’t look good at all. It’s like you want out.”
