CHAPTER 19

Remus Pack Meeting

“What are we going to do about them?” Emelie Drake had asked Jarvis as she paced frantically back in forth in front of the grand oak table that sat in the massive dining room. “The newborn was close enough to the castle that it made me worry that they'd figure out what is going on.” Her face, dulled by shadow and a faint red and orange glow from the fire, made it seem as though she were fierce and let's face it, Emilie wasn't fierce.

“I doubt they would of gotten close enough,” Jarvis said as he placed his goblet of water on the table in front of him. “They don't know a thing as of yet and when they do, things won't end pretty.”

“How long can you keep this up?” She asked as she flopped into one of the chairs that seated the rest of the pack. Her eyes said so much and yet didn't bother to say a word. Emelie wasn't the talkative type and the only thing that got her to speak was when she was reporting to Jarvis about the outcasts outings and doings. In a way it was nice to have someone that did because the rest of the pack didn't even bother. “They are going to end up finding out one way or another and let's just face it, we are screwed then.”

Jarvis slammed his fist onto the table, making Emelie jump. “They are not going to find out.” He all but yelled as though her comment had made him angry. “Regardless of this situation,” he said calmly once he got his temper under control. “Gabriel has given the order that they stay exiled.”

“Isn't that the Queen's order not his to make?” Emelie asked as she kept her head down, afraid to look at Jarvis and see the anger bubble all over again. “I mean she was basically forced in doing so because she was afraid of Gabriel.”

The statement was quiet but it made Jarvis grin. “Don't tell me that your sticking up for Sarene?” He turned to her. “You know as well as I that the Queen was all but a child when she was crowned. She doesn't even the first thing about what is going in that castle.”

Emelie glared and showed her teeth. “Ever heard of school for that?" The comment came out as a growl and Jarvis stepped closer to her to the point for where his body heat radiated anger. She could feel it.

“Don't think for a second that I would rid you of this world Em,” Jarvis snapped. “You forget who your speaking to.”

“I understand full well on who I am speaking to, ”Emelie replied. “I am merely making a statement that not every child at that age was prepared for what she is currently going through. You forget who disposed of her parents in the first place and put her in that predicament and now look,” She waved her hand toward where the castle stood. Just a few miles from where their mansion sat. “Gabriel is pretty much running her life and forcing her to make decisions that isn't to her liking. It's not a life that I would want."

“You aren't a vampire,” Jarvis said as if he was in shock from what Emelie had said. “You are one of us.” Emelie scoffed but didn't bother to say anything. She scratched the corner of her mouth and walked out of the dining room and up the staircase that lead to the multiple sets of bedrooms, leaving Jarvis alone in the dining room.

“You were there you know," Axel said as he walked in, where his pride high on his shoulders. His short black hair was tousled as though he had come back from patrol. “When Gabriel decided to murder Sarene's parents.” He swooped the goblet of water that Jarvis had and took a sip. “You can't deny a word that Emelie said."

Jarvis scoffed. “You are siding with her just because she is attempting to make a point.” He shook his head. “It isn't a time to create alliances Axel and you of all people should know this.”

“No,” Axel said. “I am siding with her because in a way I see it. You have been there. Your parents died and had nobody to really rely on. Forced into learning how to basically live, hunt, form packs, and teaching yourself how to be a leader so others can look upon you.” Axel scoffed. “Don't allow your ego to get in the way just because she is a woman. You forget that she has her right to speak her mind even if you don't like it."

Jarvis sighed. The anger that he was feeling slowly faded and it left him with a sense of guilt. He was used to being this all powerful leader who was suppose to lead his pack but at times he felt as though he was doing a terrible job. He stared intently at the fireplace, deep in thought but Axel's voice still could be heard over the voices inside of his head. “I don't understand why you would take a deal from the vampires.” He had entirely changed the subject from Emelie to how his part take in the vampires. Axel could do that more often than he liked. It was as though his brain was wired in ways that Jarvis' wasn't. “It's not like you and him are exactly friends. What was it that he promised you?"

It was no point drawing into himself and instead Jarvis turned to him and thought of a plausible explanation to give to Axel since he was so desperately seeking one out. “A part in the downfall of the humans,” Jarvis said. “Then afterwards, if he managed to take over the throne from the queen, I'd be his right hand.”

Axel shook his head as though the comment made his disappointed in Jarvis. “Power isn't always the way. We make a difference by being separate from the Vampires. At least we sought out balance.” His brows crunched together to show that he was more than disappointed. “At least that was what I was brought up on before I joined you and the rest of this pack.”

“There are a lot of things that I regret doing, Axel.” Jarvis said bluntly as though he was attempting at an apology but he was never good at making it sound like he meant it. He swooped the goblet that Axel had been holding and took a swig of water and paced it on the table in front of him. “As the leader of this pack,” he continued. “It comes with sacrifices that may effect everyone else around here. Even if it means that they end up hating me for it now but later when they realize that it was for the better,” Jarvis wiped at his brow as though he felt sweat dripping from there. “They would be thanking me.”

“How far would you go when you realize that it may cost this pack and everyone else around you their lives?” Axel's question rolled out of his mouth without a second to think about it which made Jarvis pause in his tracks. He was beginning to turn to head upstairs for a short nap before it was his turn to run patrol on the exiled vampires. “As a leader you should also be thinking about us and the consequences. This decision alone could possibly cause a war with the humans and even vampires and I am certain you don't want that." After Axel said that, the room fell silent and all you heard were the murmurs of the other members talking quietly.

Jarvis turned his head and said. “I don't plan on making that happen.” With that he turned and headed up the grand staircase that was lined with gold embroidery and wood columns. His footsteps did a tap tap sound as they retreated into his chambers.
