Sophia stood frozen in front of the executive office, her body trembling slightly.. Ethan’s words caught her off guard and she could not believe what was going on in front of her
"You were useful."
Ethan and Victoria walk back into the office and Sophia followed. Still fighting hard to believe what Ethan had said.
She could not believe it, it must have been a joke. But if it was, then it was a costly one. Nevertheless, she trailed behind them back into the office. No one tried to stop her as she followed.
Her mind reeled. She had given up her family, her career—everything—for him. And now, she was nothing more than a piece of garbage.
Victoria leaned against Ethan’s desk, a self-satisfied smirk on her lips. “You look pale, Sophia. You should sit down.”
Sophia swallowed, her throat dry, but she refused to let Victoria see her break. She lifted her chin, forcing her voice to remain steady. “How long?”
Ethan raised his eyebrow. “How long what?”
“How long have you been with her?”
Victoria let out a soft chuckle, twirling a strand of her hair. “Oh, darling, do you really want to know? I mean… would it make a difference?” she looked at her and back at Ethan. “ I told you to tell her. She is just being a nuisance right now.”
Sophia ignored her, eyes fixed on Ethan. “How long?” she repeated.
Ethan exhaled as if the conversation bored him. “A year. Does it matter anyways?”
The breath left Sophia’s lungs. A year.
He had been betraying her for a year, and she had been too blind to see it. The coming home late, the midnight calls. She had believed it all to be business but now it was dawn on her.
Victoria hummed thoughtfully. “Though, to be fair, he was already getting tired of you even before that.”
Sophia’s clenched her in anger.
“Why didn’t you just leave me?”
Ethan tilted his head, as if considering her question. “I needed you. You kept things stable. My investors liked the image we presented. But now…” He gestured gently toward Victoria. “I don’t need you anymore.”
The cold and icy tone in his voice sent a fresh wave of pain through her.
Sophia felt suffocated, like the ground under her was going to swallow her whole. She had fought for this marriage, believed in it, while he had already discarded her long ago.
She took a deep breath, steadying herself. “So, what now? Are you just going to throw me out?”
Ethan leaned back in his chair, eyes calculating. “I don’t need to throw you out, Sophia. You’re going to leave on your own.”
Sophia clenched her fists. “You think I’ll just walk away?”
Ethan chuckled, amused by her defiance. “You don’t have a choice.”
Victoria crossed her arms, smirking. “He’s right. What are you going to do? Fight for a man who doesn’t want you?”
Sophia flinched at the words, but she held her ground.
Victoria sighed dramatically. “You’ve been a good wife, Sophia. But let’s face it—you were always a little… dull. Ethan needs someone who can keep up with him.”
Sophia has had enough of the humiliation. She said nothing but simply walked out of her office.
She clenched her hands as she walked through the polished hallway down to the stairs.
As she walked, she could feel the eyes of Ethan employees on her. The whispering, she could hear them all.
“ I can't believe Ethan treated her like trash.”
“ She was being stupid. Which man hides his wife.”
“ Maybe she married him for the money?”
“ She is a fool to believe someone like Ethan was going to stay with someone like her forever. Imagine, can you take a look at her.”
The words were hitting Sophia so hard that it felt suffocating in the big exclusive mansion. She increased her pace as she hurriedly walked out of the organisation.
Getting outside, Sophia let out a cry of frustration. She got into her car and zoomed out.
She decided she was going to fight for her marriage. Victoria was not going to steal what was rightfully hers.
On getting back home, Sophia decided to get on with the surprise, she was going to show Ethan how much she loved her and how much she was ready to make it work.
She had a change of clothes before she dashed into the kitchen to prepare some delicacy for her husband. She made sure she prepared him his favourite.
Sophia set the table as she sat behind the cushion anticipating her husband. She glanced at the wall clock each time waiting for him but it looks like Ethan was not going to show up.
She ringed his phone a few times but Ethan won't pick up.
As the hours ticked by, Sophia's anticipation turned to anxiety. She had expected Ethan to walk through the door, but it looks like he was not coming back home that night.
Feeling dejected, she was about to get up from her seat when she heard the loud roar of her husband's car.
Sophia had dressed putting on revealing clothes. She needed to make Ethan have a rethink and made sure he belonged to her.
But as he walked in, Sophia looked back to see Victoria trailing behind him. Her face turned pale and anger set in. “ You brought her to our home?”
“ My home.” Ethan barked. “ I expected you to be gone by now.” He said looking at her face. “ Are you that dumb?”
The aroma of the food Sophia had cooked greeted Ethan and Victoria as they walked into the mansion.
Ethan let out a weird laughter.
“ Honestly, do you think you can win me over with this?” He looks oed at Sophia's face and back at the table that was dressed neatly with a lot of delicacies on the table. Ethan's favourites.
“ I made them for you. Happy anniversary.” Sophia let out.
Ethan let out a smirk, he dug his hand into his back pocket. “ Here is my anniversary gift for you then.”
He slowly handed her a brown envelope. As Sophia grabbed it, she stared at Ethan anxiously with a trembling hand.
Her fingers trembled as she took the envelope, her mind racing with possibilities—was it a cruel letter, a check to buy her silence, or... divorce papers?”
