Avery saw herself plunging into an abyss of darkness. She saw death face to face, grinning wickedly at her. Her childhood flashed before her eyes. An image of her sick mother lying on her hospital bed kept flickering before her. She saw her late dad, standing quietly, yet far away from her. The whole room swirled around her.
She fell to the floor with a loud thud. She saw a group of people standing around her, but her vision was too blurry to make them out. She softly groaned in pain.
A figure rushed through the crowd and knelt beside her. Jay….. She blacked out!
When her eyes opened, she breathed in a strong scented perfume, emerging very close to her. Her heart leaped as she remembered clearly, who owns that scent.
She lowered her eyelids, only to see Jay, fast asleep with his head resting peacefully underneath her arm and, his hands, clasped against her waist.
Avery attempted to get up but a sharp, excruciating pain in her head, and backbone sent her back to her former position. She lay back and with trembling fingers, gently stroked his beautiful curly hair.
How long has he been in this position? For how long has she been unconscious? Why is he so close to her? What about Rosie?
She could vividly remember how Rosie pushed her from the stairs. Avery knew that she saw her as a threat to her relationship with Jay. She thinks of her as an obstacle in their way, that needs to be gotten rid of. Because why not, that push was not accidental. It was a deliberate attempt.
She pursed so hard on her lips so hard to stop herself from crying. What wrong has she ever done to warrant all these treatments?
She turned to look at Jay and noticed he was still asleep. What really transpired between him and Rosie in the locked room? Did they make out? Was it the reason why she wanted to end her life?
He woke up and saw Avery staring at him. He sprang up immediately to his feet.
“You are awake sweetheart, you are finally awake,” he said with relief.
“I thought I was going to lose you,” he continued.
She looked straight at him without averting her gaze, with millions of thoughts going on in her mind,
“The doctor said you sustained some injuries and asked you to have some rest while taking your medication. You are going to be fine within a few weeks,” he added.
Avery nodded.
Later that night, they got discharged from the hospital. Jay helped Avery to their room and laid her in bed.
He then went out to make some tea for her. When he got back, he saw Avery sobbing silently. He stood at the doorway and heard her gentle cry amidst sniffles. He watched as she tried so hard to hide her emotions.
Jay walked closer and dropped the tray of tea beside the bed. He pulled her close and wrapped his arm around her.
“ It's alright honey, I'm here for you,” he whispered to her, and drew her even closer. The doorbell rang just then. Jay hesitated before answering the door. The door plunged open and into the room, stepped, his parents and Rosie.
Avery could sense the disappointed look on Rosie’s face. She walked to Avery, “ I'm sorry about your condition Avery dear. I got to know from the doctor, you won't be out of bed for a couple of days. Don't worry, you'll be fine. Just be persistent with your medication. And lastly, you should be more cautious next time descending the staircase. We don't want our mansion, being investigated for murder.” she ended with a mischievous glance.
Avery’s eyes burned furry. How dare she? How dare she accuse her of being careless, when she was the one who deliberately pushed her off the stairs?
Her little fists clenched hard in anger as she shot a blood-stained eye at her. Rosie noticed her visible anger and lingered even closer with an evil smile.
“Do I need to remind you that there is no evidence that I was the one who did this to you. So, even if you tell the truth, no one will believe you.” she stated with a more evil smile. Avery’s body went stiff. She could hardly believe what Rosie said. Is she really this evil?
The old folks walked up to Avery. Mr. Henryson, expressed his sympathy towards Avery while Mrs. Henryson looked on with a scrutinized look.
“This is a deliberate action. Avery, who did this to you?” Mr. Henryson demanded with a soft but fierce voice. Avery looked towards Rosie and gulped hard
How did the old man know it was nothing but a deliberate attempt on her life? Did he perhaps see Rosie pushing her off the stairs? Even if no one saw her in the act, will they believe her if she says Rosie is the culprit?
No, she won’t call her out. She has to find out her reason for trying to end her life..
“Father, don't worry I'm alright. I just missed a step and slipped. I was very tired so I wasn't cautious of my surroundings. No one did this to me.” she said with a faint smile. Jay stole a glance at her.
“Mom, Dad, I'd like to talk with my wife. Could you please excuse us? He asked his parents, who in turn nodded and dragged an unwilling Rosie out of the room and slammed the door behind them.
