The news hits me like a slapshot to the chest three days after our third engagement party.

"She transferred," Ethan says, dropping onto the couch in my apartment like he's delivering a death sentence. His usual easy smile is nowhere to be found.

I freeze with my coffee cup halfway to my mouth, the ceramic suddenly feeling too heavy. "Gone where?" I ask, my voice barely steady.
