The party continues for hours. People dance and laugh and celebrate. The band plays upbeat songs as pack members approach to offer congratulations. Their voices blend together in happy chaos.

"You did good, kid," Coach says gruffly as he claps me on the shoulder. His hand is heavy. "She's a keeper."

"I know," I agree. "Best decision I ever made."

"Better late than never," the coach says, but he's smiling.

My mother corners us near the food table. She's still crying. "I'm so proud ...
