Penelope leaves to gather supplies for tonight, saying we'll need privacy and preparation. I don't ask for details because my mind is too busy replaying what she told me about Dad—how he put his hands on her, threatened her, burned her mother's house while the Council charges hang over him in legal limbo.

Kael is screaming for blood, for justice, for his throat between our teeth. I'm almost sympathetic to the idea.
