Penelope's POV

The backlash starts before we even reach the Council building.

Someone slashes our tires in the parking lot. Mom and I stand there staring at the flat rubber while reporters circle like vultures.

"Did you see who did it?" one reporter shouts.

"Any comment on the allegations?" another calls out.

I don't answer, I just pull out my phone and call Isla.

"We need a ride," I told her. "Someone destroyed our car."

"On my way." Isla doesn't hesitate. "Ten minutes."
