Everything I Thought I Knew Was Wrong

"You're... Tristan?"

The name felt wrong in my mouth. Like trying to swallow something too big, something that would choke me.

"Surprise," he said, and there was something almost amused in his voice. "Is it surprising? I didn't think it's surprising."

I pulled back from him, desperate to put space between us even though my body protested against the distance. Everything felt wrong suddenly, like the world had tilted sideways and I couldn't find my balance anymore.
