Despite everything, I felt my lips twitch. “He made us sit in the kitchen while he lectured us about responsibility for two hours.”

“And then your mom came down and made us hot chocolate.” Cameron smiled. “She said if we were going to be idiots, we should at least be well-fed idiots.”

“That was her philosophy about most things.” The tears came again, but quieter this time. “Feed people. That fixes everything.”
