CHAPTER 18 AGAINST MY WILL

Rose came in with all smiles. She wanted to know why the boss was all over me and even took his bath in my room. I had to explain to her that someone had tried to rob us and I intervened and they beat the hell out of me.

“So what was the boss doing?” Rose asked.

“Fighting off the other two,” I said.

“But he has no injuries,” she replied.

“That’s because he is a good fighter,” I replied.

I was beginning to doubt the sincerity of Rose’s action, but when I heard Ken’s voice I knew I had to act fast.

“Rose, come here quickly,” I beckoned to her. “I don’t want anyone except you to enter my room. When you go out, please lock the door. I want you to tell Ken I am not around and you are standing in for me at the moment. If he asked, tell him you don’t know where I went to, okay,” I said.

“Okay, I can hear his voice already,” she said.

Rose locked the door behind her. I took my phone by the side of the bed and called Marvin to inform him Ken was here and what I told Rose. He was quite happy, he didn’t want Ken to know either. I was glad that we were on the same page.

I called Larry several times but he did not pick up any of the calls. I felt bad that I had not been able to speak to him. I wondered if he was okay and whether if he sustained any injury it was healing. I knew Larry was not a match for Josh and neither was I. If not for quick reactions, I would have been dead.

Josh was a very skilled assassin and he showed no mercy. I wondered if Josh had told the contractor about the possibility of having those documents with me. Anyone with the documents could easily wreck Marvin”s company. Marvin Senior was a killer and the documents proved it.

I knew I had to get to Uncle Jonah before he got to Marvin. Something tells me he has sinister plans and wants Marvin’s downfall. If Marvin could not get a wife in six months, the company would be his. I don’t think the son of Uncle Jonah cares about any inheritance, no one hardly sees Uncle Jonah’s son around.

I took my phone and tried calling Larry again. He did not take the call. I was getting frustrated. I needed him to send me the adrenaline capsules so I could get out of that bed and try to protect my lover.

Marvin came back and I could hear him talking to Ken. He was telling Ken that there was no need to come to the house and that Ken would have called before coming. I could hear Ken saying a lot of things he needed to sort out with him and could not do that over the phone, but Marvin was not having any of it and told him to go and wait for him at the office.

Marvin came into my room with the food that he had bought. I was really very hungry. I had been on liquid since I woke up.

“You went out to buy the food?” I asked.

“I can not take any risks. Right now I don’t trust anyone, there are too many attacks in my life and I think I am opening myself to them easily,” Marvin replied.

“I am sorry,” was all I could say as I rushed through the meal.

“You don’t have to be sorry, it’s not your fault and what could I have done without you?” He said

“I know, but still I am sorry,” I said.

“Would you please calm down? You may choke the way you are rushing the food like you have not eaten since yesterday,” Marvin said.

It was when he mentioned yesterday it occurred to me that I had not eaten since yesterday. The previous day I had nothing in the morning, believing I would eat when I got to the party, but that did not happen as Josh saw to that.

No wonder I was easily tired during the fight and I fainted multiple times on the way to the hospital. I was so vexed with myself for not paying attention to my eating habits. I want to stay energized at all times. When I became better, I promised myself I was going to stock up on energy boosters and carry them all the time with me.

“Are you okay?” Marvin asked.

“Why? Haven’t I slowed down on eating?” I asked.

“You seemed lost in thought,” he said.

“You worry too much,” I told him.

Marvin was just looking at me as I ate the food and I noticed he was not eating his. “Are you not going to eat yours or should I take it that you have succeeded in poisoning me?” I asked.

He laughed, “Why would you say such a thing? The only thing I want to poison you with is love,” Marvin said.

“You already did, I am sure you will pay for it,” I said.

“You mean I am going to pay for poisoning you with love, you can’t be serious,” he said.

“I am,” I insisted.

Just then, Larry called me and I quickly took his call.

“Hello Larry, please tell me you are okay,” I said.

“Yes I am, had a lot of cuts and injuries but nothing serious,” Larry said.

“That’s good news, oh, you don’t want to know how much I longed to hear that,” I said.

Larry asked “Who the hell was that guy? He was far better.”

“Can I call you back, Marvin is here and I need to attend to you,” I said as I abruptly cut off the call. I knew who Larry was referring to, it was Josh and I knew Marvin was listening to our conversation. I had to lie and be good at it to convince Marvin.

“‘I thought you said all the information you had on Josh was given to you by Larry?” Marvin asked.

“Of course, I said so,” I said in my most convincing manner.

“So what was he talking about and who was he referring to?” Marvin asked.

“He was referring to the bodyguard who shot one of the assassins and injured Josh.” I lied.

“Please you are losing me here. Are you not the one that said Larry hired the bodyguards?” He asked, looking very serious now.

“He was not one of us, so we thought he was from you. That was because he was a good shooter, though Josh killed him,” I lied again.

“There are too many mysteries surrounding these attacks and it is safer to know why and know who so we can put an end to them. I am really getting tired and frustrated at living,” he said.
