“Hello, how are you doing today?” Marvin asked me, smiling.
“What are you doing here, you are not Doctor Jakes,” I said, trying to straighten my leg on the bed.
“I can be Doctor James if you let me,” Marvin replied.
“Okay, but is it not strange that he has not shown up since yesterday?” I asked.
“He will please relax my dear,” Marvin said. His phone had been ringing and it was beginning to sound annoying.
“Won’t you take that call? At least tell the person that you are busy,” I said.
“It’s Shantel, she has been calling since last night,” Marvin said.
It was very early in the morning and my room was bathed in the soft glow of the bedside lamp, casting a warm and intimate ambiance as Marvin sat by my bedside as we faced each other.
It was a rare moment of vulnerability, and my heart was pounding in my chest as I gathered the courage to express what had been weighing on my mind. I was grateful for all he had done. Yes, I had saved his life, but he had loved me.
"Marvin," I began, my voice trembling slightly, "there's something I need to tell you," I said.
His eyes were so deep and soulful, and they met mine with a curious and affectionate gaze. He nodded, encouraging me to continue.
Taking a deep breath, I reached out to hold his hand, feeling his reassuring warmth.
"I love you, Marvin. I truly, deeply love you, and I would do anything in my power to keep you safe and happy," I said.
Marvin's expression softened, and a gentle smile tugged at the corners of his lips. It was a smile that made my heart flutter, knowing that he understood the sincerity of my words.
"Cass, I love you too, more than words can express. You mean the world to me," he said, his voice filled with a warmth that mirrored my own feelings.
The weight of unspoken emotions seemed to lift from our shoulders as our love for each other hung in the air, tangible and undeniable. It was a love that had grown slowly but steadily, a love that had faced trials and tribulations, and had only emerged stronger.
As I gazed into Marvin's eyes, I knew that our connection was something special, something worth cherishing. But there is a truth that has been revealed to us both, though in different ways. I needed him to know.
"Marvin," I said, my voice filled with concern,
"I've been thinking about what happened with Shantel, about Ken's intentions," I continued.
Marvin's expression turned serious, and he nodded solemnly. He had also been wrestling with the unsettling revelation that Ken did not want him to get married, that Shantel had been sent to play mind games with his heart.
"I know, Cassie," he replied, his voice heavy with a mixture of frustration and understanding. "I can't believe I let myself be fooled by her, by Ken's manipulation."
I squeezed his hand gently, offering comfort and reassurance. "Marvin, it's not your fault. You trusted her because you have a kind heart, and that's something I love about you."
"Thank you, Cassie. I'm just relieved to have you by my side through all of this," he smiled gratefully, his eyes filled with gratitude.
We sat in silence for a moment, each lost in our own thoughts, but with a shared understanding of the challenges that lay ahead. Our love had been tested, and though the road ahead was uncertain.
Marvin leaned in to kiss me, our lips met in a sweet and tender embrace. It was a kiss filled with promise, a promise that we would navigate the complexities of our lives.
Our love was not a force to be reckoned with, and there were going to be so many interferences that could diminish the depth of our affection for each other.
While we were still in each other's embrace, Doctor Jake stepped in. We both greeted him and he asked if Marvin could excuse us so that he could be with me alone. I smiled at the instant he said he wanted to be alone with me.
"Doctor, there is nothing Marvin does not know about me, he was the one that saved me from those boys," I said.
"Okay, if you say so, but I think you should stop this narrative about being attacked by a group of boys because that can not happen in a town like ours and your cuts, wounds, and bruises were intentional, but the perpetrators. It is only a trained person that could be that precise and exact," Doctor Jake said.
"Is there anything you want to tell me, Doctor?" I asked.
"A police officer came by my office to find out what happened to you and, because I had not given him my report, he thought you were molested by Mr. Marvin, So I suggest you tell Mr. Marvin the truth and save his good name from this Chaos you are about to breed," The Doctor said.
Marvin quickly intervened when he saw the direction the doctor was taking. He knew it would be safer if only fewer people knew what was happening in and around his life.
"Doctor, what I told you is what happened and that is what you would give the police because I was there when it happened. You could tell them the boys were professional assassins. I don't care. But I am not going to change the story, and neither will she," Marvin said.
"In that case, let's get on with the treatment, but you must know Officer Page does not let off that easily," Doctor Jakes said.
The doctor administered some drugs to me and checked my progress. He told me my body worked like magic as some of the cuts and bruises were now healed. He asked that I stay in bed for another day to give my body a proper rest. I was not going to argue with him about that, because nobody needed to tell me that my body was demanding some form of rest. I wished Marvin was going to stay with me but, I knew he had to go to work.
When the Doctor left, he looked at me and said, "You know that you and I need to take a proper rest so that our bodies can heal."
I could not help but laugh. "You cannot fool me. I am not Shantel," I said.
