CHAPTER 20: BACK TO THE OFFICE

It was an excellent feeling to be back in the office. It has been three days, and I still feel pain in my thigh and my arm, but staying at home was not my thing. I asked Rose to assist me at the office and at Marvin's mansion. She did a great job.

"Hello, Rose!" I said.

"Wow! It is so nice to have you back. How are you feeling my darling?" Rose asked.

"Much better, and I do sincerely miss our office get-together. Anyway, I'm back, and seeing you in the office is a great relief," I said.

I was still enjoying Rose's company when Ken walked in. He did not seem happy and I was not happy seeing him either. it was always my fault that he looked unhappy anytime he saw me. He was a nuisance at display.

"Where have you been for the past three days? You have missed work for three days without any approval" he asked.

"I took three days off because I was sick. Is there a problem?" I said.

"So you took three days off without telling me and you thought there was no problem. You said you were sick but when I came to the house I saw you were not there," Ken said. At that point, he was very furious.

"I said I was sick. I had to be taken care of. It was an emergency” I said again, only this time my voice was a little higher.

"Excuse me, you did not know you were sick and the sickness became an emergency," Ken said.

"Please you can check that out with Marvin if you think I am lying," I said.

"Okay, let's go, I would really love to see what Marvin would say," he said.

Marvin was on the phone when we got to his office. I stood behind smiling at myself and waiting at the entrance of Marvin's office, and Ken went in angrily ignoring the fact that Marvin was on call and was really signaling that we should wait behind at the entrance.

He sat down and waved me to come in. I went in gradually, looking as if I was scared of something and as if I was hesitating to talk to anyone. It was my tactic to tell Marvin that Ken was just after me without any reason.

"Oh, now you are afraid? I thought you said Marvin gave you permission," he said.

"What is wrong with you Ken? You barge into my office knowing fully well I was on call. You can't wait? And what is she doing here?" Marvin asked.

I thought about it. Marvin must be really tired of all the shenanigans being exhibited by Ken. I still did not know what he wanted and why he was working for Uncle Jonah, but he really had been pretty petty towards me.

"Marvin! This lady has not been to the office for about three days and you think it's right. We have a business to run and not a charity," Ken said, refusing to apologize for rudely interrupting Marvin.

"What a minute, is that why you brought her to my office? You could not handle the simple task of asking her what happened to her," Marvin said.

"She said you knew," Ken said.

"I think you are obsessed with Cass and, yes, she was not feeling fine. If she did not tell you, then ask her why, not to bring her to my office just because you have my access. And by the way, she has a name. Her name is Cass, please call her that," Marvin said.

"Hmm, that's okay. Shantel said she was coming today. Have you heard from her?" Ken said, looking at me.

"And why does she need to tell you and not me," Marvin said.

"You have been avoiding her calls, ain't you?" Ken asked.

"That's my business and none of your business. Give her a 2 p.m. appointment," Marvin said.

“Office or home," Ken asked.

“Have I ever met anyone at home? What are you trying to pull?" Marvin replied.

Ken looked at me, shook his head, and left. He felt very disappointed that Marvin did not give him the opportunity to ridicule me as he wanted to—Marvin signaled to me to have a seat, by the wave of his hand, as Ken was leaving.

"I'm sorry about that, when you are ready, I am ready. You don't truly have to go through that", Marvin said.

"I don't get you Marvin, I'm lost. What do you mean please?" I said.

"Cass, you said you love me and I love you too, so when you are ready to let the world know about us, I will be patiently waiting to do the same. That's what I meant," Marvin said, smiling as though he needed confirmation from me to ascertain we were on the same ship.

How can a man want the person that was sent to kill him? the same person who killed his father and removed his father from the political hierarchy situation in the Mafia world. I was teary. I knew he loved me, but not like this. The Contractor will come for both of us and anyone associated with us. He would show us no mercy and take everything we know or ever built from us.

"Cass! You are not talking, please say something, I beg you to say something. I thought we had a thing the other day, I thought we had something going on, I need you, Common Cass please," Marvin said.

"Marvin, oh my Marvin, if you know how much I do love you, you will know there is no need of you begging me. I think we really need to wait a little longer, the situation we find ourselves in does not make it that easy," I said.

"So you would prefer Ken treating you this way with all the games he has been playing, rather than telling the world you are in love with me," Marvin said.

"Nope, but in the meantime, you and I have him to deal with," I said.

"Anyway, I will talk to you later at home. Please come home. I cannot wait to have you in my arms. For now, I have Shantel to tell off. I will ask one of the bodyguards to pick you up at the close of work," Marvin said.

'Thank you, my love, I would love that" I said.

"You see that's what I am talking about," Marvin said. I could see that it made him happy. He was a good man, but in my line of business, the good ones are easy targets. The office is definitely going to be interesting these days.
