As I lay on my bed wondering what to do next with the whole issue. It is either I kill Marvin or I protect him. But it seemed like he was considered a target by too many people. His father must have had so many adversaries.
I had come to love him, though I knew that love was not enough reason not to eliminate the target. Letting Marvin live longer exposes me to so many threats that may even take my life. I knew it would come to either be my life or his or even both. Another thing I needed to figure out was who Ken was working for. From every indication, it looked like Uncle Jonah, but I certainly could not say if he did work for Uncle Jonah. I wished Rose had been here with me. I would have asked her if any meeting had occurred again in the Bar.
I decided that I would keep Marvin as long as I could and if I couldn’t, no one was going to do the killing but me. I wondered why the Contractor had not called yet. I had closed the contract by killing every assassin hired to take out Marvin, yet he had not called. What if he knew I was protecting him? I had two months left to deliver according to the contract.
I thought it would be nice to give Marvin the opportunity to have a child before killing him if I had to. That means killing Shantel and Ken too. And that also means getting Marvin married to a lady. I thought of a nice plan to get Marvin a wife. I was going to ask Marvin to get into a secret contract marriage. He should sign a marriage contract with a lady of his choice and pay them off after two years. This will put off the threat from Uncle Jonah and, at least, let me settle the issue with the Contractor. Without his call, no plan could be executed.
The Contractor called. I had almost thought that not getting his call meant I was in a serious dilemma. I was happy to see his call. If for nothing else, it meant I was still in the game.
"Hello, Number Five," he said with his husky voice.
I almost did not hear what he said. So I asked him."What did you just call me?" I said.
"Number Five" repeated the Contractor.
"That's not possible, should I hang up the call?" I asked.
"You have not executed your last contract, you can jump the course." The Contractor said.
"I know, and you know, I have the trust of the target and have eliminated every threat," I said.
I could hear his voice break, laughter did not suit him, I knew that for the Contractor to engage me this long on the phone, he has a request and I was going to capitalise on that.
"Eliminate all the threats, no! Number Five, you did not eliminate any threat. Marvin's will always be in danger and I want my documents", the Contractor said.
"You will get the documents. By my contract, I still have two months and some days left," I said.
"I have a job for you," the Contractor said.
"No contract can be signed when an existing contract is still open. That's our code of conduct or do you want to break it?" I asked the Contractor.
"Yes! The Contractor said.
"Send the information, and for the records, I will be paid as a Number Two and a Five Star Hire, all equipment for the job to be paid for and provided by the principal. Apart from the contract fee of a Number Two. I will be getting a hundred million dollars," I said.
"Okay, as long you do the job perfectly, no witnesses. You have only a week to do the job. The files are in your safe. Good luck Number Two, You will need it.* He said and hung up the call.
I had this sigh of great relief. I am now Number Two and the call has done two memorable things for me. I am not a target and I got another contract.
I called Larry to let me know about the new contract and that I would be coming home soon.
Marvin walked into the room. He had ice cream and nuts.
"The weekend was going to be a long and boring one without the help of these two," said Marvin, showcasing what was in his hands.
“Do you want some?" He asked.
"Is that supposed to be a question?" I asked. “Of course I want,”.
It was so refreshing and I loved the banana-flavored ice cream with a little vodka.
Marvin looked at me again and this time I knew he wanted to say something serious. "I am curious. I know you told me you learned all these skills on the streets, but I feel there is more. You act like you have been in the Marines," he said.
"I did, but I was kicked out before I finished," I said, and this was actually true. For anyone to be hired by the Contractor, you need to have formally served in the military.
Oh, I get it now, so the street girl used to be a trained military personnel,” he said with the ice cream all over his mouth.
“Yeah!” I said, taking a big chunk out of my ice cream. I had lied about being brought up in the streets but not about my training, except for the fact that I was also a trained Assassin, a trained killer!
“Marvin, I need to take a break, I need a vacation or something,” I said, trying to find a way to get one week from him to attend to the contractor’s job before the Contractor’s next call.
“Okay, I have been thinking about it too, away from all these killings and attempts on my life. Let's go to the Madilves,” Marvin said so ignorantly that I felt like spanking him.
“That would be nice but I need to attend to something that would help me focus on protecting you,” I said.
“I don’t get it. The saviour of my life wants a break from it. How many days do you want?” he asked.
“Two weeks, I will arrange with Larry. He will not be seen on sight but he will always be around to see that you are well protected at all times,” I said.
