CHAPTER 36: AFFIRMATION

As I walked into Marvin's office, a whirlwind of emotions swirled within me. It had been far too long since I'd seen Marvin, and our warm hug conveyed the depth of our unspoken connection. His voice was filled with a mixture of relief and curiosity as he welcomed me. I wondered what had happened to him since I left. It has been a week and few days but it certainly looked like a year.

"Marvin, it's been so long! I've missed you," I said with a shaky smile, trying to compose myself.

Marvin leaned back in his chair, studying me closely. "Cass, you look great. It's been too long indeed or would I say you took longer than expected and I'm glad to see you." He said.

I had so many questions to ask him. I asked him about office, about his mansion, about who was troubling him and a lot of ther things. You would think that we had not seen in years.

He spoke of how smoothly things had been going, but I couldn't help but feel the weight of what I was about to do. The secretary's call interrupted our reunion, informing us that Ken was waiting at Marvin's reception area. My heart skipped a beat; I knew I had to tell him something about why I had to leave the way I left and why I took a vacation, that the time had come.

"Marvin," I began, my voice trembling slightly, "there's something I need to tell you. About why I had to leave."

Marvin's eyes locked onto mine, his concern deepening. "Cass, what happened? You can tell me anything. You know I will not pressure about that, you are a grown girl." He stopped and looked at me again,

But before I could respond, Ken walked into the room, an air of urgency surrounding him. He seemed agitated, his eyes darting between Marvin and me.

"Marvin," he said abruptly, "I need to speak with you, urgently. And I'd prefer Cassie not be present."

Marvin hesitated, a perplexed expression on his face. I knew I had to intervene, to shield him from the truth.

Ken continued, “Marvin there is something important you need to know,” He said.

“Ken, go ahead we are listening,” Marvin said.

“I need to talk to you alone,” he replied.

"Ken," I interjected, attempting to maintain my composure, "I think it's best that I stay. Whatever it is, say it . Marvin trusts me."

Marvin nodded in agreement, still looking concerned. Ken sighed, relenting, and then delivered the shocking news that sent shivers down my spine.

"Uncle Jonah has been attacked, and Shantel has been kidnapped." Ken said.

My heart raced, and I struggled to maintain a facade of concern. Ken continued, describing the ransom demand and the urgency of the situation. But my mind was racing, torn between the lie I was about to tell and the lie Ken just told which has resulted to the turmoil of emotions bubbling beneath the surface.

As Marvin and Ken delved deeper into the details of the crisis, I couldn't help but wonder about the consequences of the lie I had woven into this web of intrigue. The truth, though painful, would have been so much simpler to bear. But for now, I had to stand by my decision, protect my secrets, and help Marvin navigate the storm that was approaching with every passing moment.

I watched both of then in silence and remembered when Marvin had told me he could not find anyone to trust. I was not surprised that Ken was working for Uncle Jonah because I had suspected it all along.

“How did you know Uncle Jonah was kidnapped ,” I asked Ken who turned around in shock.

“You are in no position to question me, Cass,” he said.

“Why? You just said that Shantel was kidnapped and Uncle Jonah was attacked, are both events related.” I asked refusing to keep quiet.

Ken ignored me and turned to Marvin, but Marvin was not having any of it. “Ken you need to let us know, I understand your position, but what Cass asked was the right question,” Marvin said as the room went back into silence.

Ken's information about Uncle Jonah's attack and Shantel's kidnapping sent a chill down my spine. As the words hung heavily in the air, I couldn't help but sense that something was amiss. It became clear that Ken was working for Uncle Jonah. If not he would not come out with this. I had to question him, to get to the truth. Shantel was half right! Uncle Jonah is planning Marvin’s downfall.

"Ken, I find it hard to believe, and this has nothing to do with Marvin. So What is the cause of this?" I said, my tone measured and skeptical. "It sounds like an extreme coincidence, and I've always known Uncle Jonah to be cautious."

Ken's gaze locked onto mine, frustration evident in his eyes. "Cass, I understand your skepticism, but this isn't the time for doubt. Uncle Jonah was genuinely threatened. He reported it to the police, and Officer Page is on his way here right now to discuss it with Marvin because U ncle Jonah felt the recent attempts on Marvin’s life may have spiraled to him." Ken said.

"Ken, can you provide any evidence of these threats? Any notes or messages? Anything that would substantiate your claims?"

Ken shifted uncomfortably in his seat, seemingly caught off guard by my request. "Well, no, but I heard it from Uncle Jonah himself. He was terrified, Cass. We can't afford to waste time."

Uncertainty gnawed at me, and I couldn't shake the nagging suspicion that Ken might working with Uncle Jonah and was not telling the whole truth. I knew I needed to tread carefully, especially with the allegations that Uncle Jonah's life was in danger because of Marvin.

“Uncle Jonah needs to be protected, I would see to it that some guards were attached to him,” Marvin said.

"Ken, I'm not saying I don't believe you," I said, choosing my words cautiously, "but this is an incredibly serious matter. We need to verify the information as thoroughly as we can before we take any drastic action." I said.

Ken clenched his fists, frustration evident in his voice. "Cass, I understand your hesitation, but we don't have the luxury of time. We need to act quickly to ensure Uncle Jonah's safety." said Ken.

“I agree with Ken on this. Safety first before all these accusations and counter accusations. Let the officer come, I will handle him. Cass can you get to the company that provides us with bodyguards so we can apply to have some for Uncle Jonah,” Larry said.

“Why Cass?” It is Uncle Jonah and not you Marvin, I don’t think Cass should get involved in this. Ken said sounding so infuriated.

“Okay, Ken. I will give you one of mine while you get two others for him immediately. Please do not delay,” Larry said. Both of us knew it was a way of keeping an eye on them by give them one of Marvin’s bodyguards.

I couldn't shake the feeling that there were more layers to this situation than met the eye. I had to trust my instincts, remain vigilant, and ensure that I had made the right decisions concerning Uncle Jonah, for Shantel, Mr. Ross and for our own safety in this murky, uncertain world.
