I sat down in Marvin's office and watched him make several calls. Some of them to his business partners, while some to Uncle Jonah’s family to confirm that everything was okay. I wanted to tell him the truth about Shantel earlier but decided to stick to the untruth.
“I don’t think Shantel was kidnapped. I think she left the country as we told her to and maybe she did that without informing Uncle Jonah,” I said.
Marving shook his head in disagreement. “How did she leave with her father, because from the calls I made Shantel’s father is nowhere to be found,” Marvin replied.
“I wonder what could have happened,” I said, though I knew exactly what happened. Marvin was in a situation and so was I. “Please can you get your lawyer? I really do not like that Officer Page,” I said.
“Get Tessy now,” Marvin instructed the receptionist as we waited for Officer Page.
Officer Page's arrival at Marvin's office added a new layer of complexity to the already puzzling situation. The stern, no-nonsense look on his face told us that he meant business. As he asked Marvin about his involvement in Uncle Jonah's attack and Shantel's disappearance, I couldn't help but hold my breath, my suspicions growing even stronger.
“I will not speak to you any longer until my lawyer is here. I don’t want to be misquoted or harassed in any way,” Marvin said.
“Mr. Marvin, I have never harassed you before and you know that,” said Officer Page.
“I am sorry, you have and I am not going to take that route again. Please wait as Tessy is already on her way,” Marvin said.
Tessy walked in so majestically, “Good afternoon gentlemen and ladies, shall we begin?” She said as she quickly sat down after acting extremely formal.
"Mr. Marvin," Officer Page began, his gaze steady, "can you please explain to me your connection to the attack on Uncle Jonah and the disappearance of Shantel?"
Marvin leaned forward, his voice trembling slightly as he responded, "Officer Page, I swear I have no involvement in any of this. I had no idea this was happening."
But Officer Page wasn't done. He asked the question that had been lingering in the back of my mind since Ken's shocking revelation: "Mr. Marvin, were you aware of any threats to your life recently? Do you think the attempted assassination has any connection to what happened to Uncle Jonah and Shantel?"
The room seemed to grow colder as we all pondered the implications of Officer Page's question. It was as if a web of secrets, half-truths, and deceit was slowly unraveling before us. I knew that there was no connection and that all these were cooked up by Uncle Jonah and Ken and that Shantel was safe in the UK.
Marvin hesitated for a moment, deep in thought, and then said, "Officer Page, I received some threats to my life, but I didn't think they were connected to Uncle Jonah or Shantel. I assumed they were unrelated."
Ken walked into the office after the receptionist had allowed him to come in. He greeted everyone and sat down.I exchanged a quick glance with Ken, and it was clear that we both shared a sense of unease.
Officer Page, clearly not satisfied with the answers he was receiving, pressed further. "Mr. Marvin, I'll need you to cooperate fully with our investigation. We'll get to the bottom of this, but it's crucial that we have all the information."
“My client is giving you all the information you need or are you trying to say that he should tell something else rather than the truth,” Tessy interrupted the officer’s mode of questioning.
As Officer Page continued to question Marvin, I couldn't help but wonder if the threads of this enigmatic web were leading us closer to the truth or spiraling us deeper into a tangled, perilous mystery. One thing was certain: there was much more to this situation than met the eye.
Uncle Jonah planned the kidnapping of Mr. Ross but was now acting like the victim. With all that was happening, I had now come to believe that he was planning to kill Shantel if I had not intervened by saving her father and taking them to the safe house.
Shantel had said it did not look like Ken was on it with Uncle Jonah. I don't think so. He looked like he was the master architect of the whole thing. I need to warn Marvin to check irregularities in his finances and accounts. I was sure this was their next step but we had to finish with Officer Page first.
“Officer Page, if there is nothing more we would all love to get back to work,” Tessy said.
“Okay, but I would love to see you at the station for more interrogation as things get revealed,” the officer said as he left with Tessy leading him out and the both of them chatting.
After Officer Page's departure, the tension in Marvin's office seemed to ease slightly, and a nervous chuckle escaped Marvin's lips.
"Cass," he said with a wry grin, "I swear, it's only when you're around that we get this much action. It's like you bring drama with you."
I managed a weak smile, acknowledging the irony in his words, but my mind was far from light-hearted. The events of the day had taken a toll on all of us, and I was determined to uncover the truth. I need to know who has Ken’s allegiance.
Marvin turned to Ken, his gaze a mix of curiosity and concern. "Ken, whose side are you on in all of this? What's going on?" He asked.
Ken hesitated for a moment, and I could sense the weight of his decision. He finally replied, "Marvin, I'm on your side. I've always been. I just want to get to the bottom of this situation and ensure Uncle Jonah's safety."
As Ken left Marvin's office, I seized the opportunity to speak privately with Marvin. I could see the confusion in his eyes, and I knew that my request was a significant one.
"Marvin, I have a favor to ask," I began, my voice earnest. "I know you have a lot on your plate right now, but with all this uncertainty, I think it's crucial that you privately audit your books and accounts."
Marvin raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by my suggestion. "Cass, do you really think that's necessary? I trust my team."
I leaned in closer, my eyes locked onto his eyes, I was willing for him to understand the gravity of my request. "Marvin, it's not about trust. It's about ensuring that there are no hidden motives or secrets lurking beneath the surface. We need to be thorough in our investigation, and this is a critical step. Above all, I don’t want to take anything for granted."
Marvin took a deep breath and then nodded slowly. "You're right, Cass. We need to leave no stone unturned. I'll start the audit right away."
With that promise, I felt a glimmer of hope. I was bound by the desire to uncover the truth and protect the one I loved. As the day's events unfolded, the mysteries deepened, but I was determined to stay by Marvin's side, unraveling the enigma that had entwined our lives and threatened those I held dear.
