I sat in the doctor’s office wondering what had just happened to me. It looked as if the lights were too bright for the heavy news I had just received. I was stunned, but I knew this could happen, yet I did not know why I allowed it to happen.
I did not take precautions, my mind was racing with a thousand thoughts as Dr. Jake shared the ceiling with me. I would normally have looked for other options but my love for Marvin had affected my thoughts too. I laid down and my guard.
“How long have I been pregnant, Dr. Jake?” I asked, my voice trembling. As if the doctor’s response would affect my decision. I had already made a decision and why I made that decision is what my whole system was struggling with.
Dr. Jake looked at me, he smiled in a very compassionate and reassuring way.
“I may not be able to tell you exactly how long, but from the test, I think you would be three weeks pregnant,” the doctor said.
“Wow! That’s great,” I said, smiling at the news that it was still early.
“Have you thought about what you would want to do?” Dr. Jake asked me.
I sat there, still quiet. At that point, I did not understand why I was with the doctor when I should have rushed home to Marvin to tell him the good news.
“It is okay, Dr. Jakes, I think I would be just fine. Thank you,” I said.
“I understand that this might be overwhelming right now, but I think it is crucial for you to make a decision about what you want to do next, and whatever decision you make I would be right here, Cass,” the doctor said, his eyes filled with empathy.
“Thank you, Dr. Jake, I would appreciate it if you didn’t tell anyone about this, not even Marvin. Please, can you do that for me?” I said.
I could not tell Marvin it would destroy us. I have to find a way to hide it from Sancho and from the Contractor too. It was not going to be easy, but I have got a job to do and until I figure out what I wanted, I would keep the status quo.
“I have heard you, Cass. I am a doctor and you have absolute confidentiality with me,” Dr. Jake said.
"Please, Dr. Jake," I said, my voice pleading, "You can't tell anyone about this. Not Marvin, not anyone." I said, repeating myself again to lay emphasis on what I wanted.
Dr. Jake nodded, respecting my wishes. "I'm here to support your decision, Cass, and confidentiality is crucial. Whatever you choose, it's your right to decide who you share this with," he said.
Relief washed over me as I realized Dr. Jake would keep my secret safe. But I still had to make a decision, a choice that would shape my future and impact the people I cared about. I needed time to think.
As I left the doctor’s office and walked along the street to where my car was parked, my phone buzzed with a message from Marvin. He wanted me to set up a date with Miss June, our next step in the elaborate plan we were entangled in.
It was a reminder of the life we had led, one filled with danger, secrets, and schemes. But now, with the weight of my pregnancy on my shoulders, everything has shifted for me.
I agreed to help Marvin with setting up a meeting with Miss June, but my thoughts were elsewhere. As I navigated the winding roads of deception and betrayal, I knew I had to confront another challenge.
Marvin had instructed Tessy, the lawyer, to draw up a marriage contract between him and Miss June. This was a crucial part of our plan, but the terms were far from ordinary.
I hoped that June would agree to the contract, but it wasn't just about securing our next move. The idea of marriage weighed on me, a commitment that could change everything. My thoughts returned to my pregnancy and the secret I carried, making me question the decisions I was about to make.
Late that night, I confided in Larry. He had always been my confidant, my rock when the world was chaotic. We met in a quiet, dimly lit cafe, not our usual spot when we needed a private conversation. I wanted something different.
"Cassie, what's going on? You've been distant lately," Larry said, his eyes filled with concern.
I took a deep breath, steeling myself for the revelation. "Larry, I'm pregnant," I confessed.
His eyes widened, and he looked at me in disbelief. "Pregnant? Cassie, how... and who? Is this for Marvin?" Larry asked in amazement, his eyes asking me how I let it happen to me. I was always careful about everything.
I knew I had to be honest with him. "It's Marvin's," I admitted.
Larry's expression softened, and he reached across the table to hold my hand.
"Cassie, I'm here for you. What do you want to do?" he asked.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized that Larry was the friend I needed right now, the one who wouldn't judge me for the choices I had to make. "I don't want to abort, Larry, and I don't know how Marvin will react when he finds out," I said.
Larry nodded, his support unwavering. "We'll face that when the time comes, Cassie. Your decision is your own, and I'll stand by you, no matter what," Larry said with a strong assuring voice.
The weight of my secret and the choices ahead of me pressed heavily on my shoulders, but I knew I had an ally in Larry. We were in this together, navigating a sea of uncertainty, secrets, and unexpected challenges. I only hoped that our friendship and the strength of our bond would be enough to weather the storm that lay ahead.
The next few days were divided between keeping up appearances with Marvin and preparing for the upcoming meeting with Miss June. Marvin did not understand why I had to distance myself from him.
At the Mansion, I shut my door immediately I got to my room and refrained from seeing him or going to his room like old times. The weight of our elaborate plan bore down on me, and my mind was often a whirlwind of doubt and fear. Yet, I had to put on a brave face and keep moving forward.
