“Hello, Cass, I would love you to see Tessy about the marriage contract and please do your best to go through it,” Marvin said.
“Have you changed your mind about delivering it to Miss June? It would be better to come from you,” I said. I did not want to do it since I now have a part of Marvin in me. It felt like I was betraying my unborn child.
“No, Cass! I want it official, so let’s keep it that way,” Marvin said.
“As you wish, it’s not a problem,” I said.
I met with the lawyer and we went through the contract. As a woman, I felt it was so rigid. The contract states that Marvin does not owe her any ties, especially emotionally or financially, and that she was to do everything with her money and not to expect anything from Marvin. They were offering her five million dollars for two years. I thought to myself no woman would accept that.
“Don’t you think that this is too rigid?” I asked Tessy, who was still reading out some of the items on the contract placed on the table in front of us.
“No, why do you ask? Is Marvin not paying her?” She asked, looking lost as if I said something that was confusing to her.
“So, in other words, Marvin does not want anything to do with her. He just wanted her to appear as a wife on occasion and would not live with her. Many people are going to see that this was arranged, especially some of those people that we do not want to know the truth,” I said.
“You know you are a brilliant lady, Cass. And I see the way Marvin looks at you. I don’t know why he would be doing this when he could as well marry you. From the way you treat him, you love him too. Anyway, about the contract and the marriage, no one is meant to know except the four of us,” Tessy said.
That’s a great move. So I just have to ensure that June accepts the terms of the contract.,” I said.
“Yes, my job here is done, and yours has begun. I wish you good luck. Remember whether June accepts it or not. She has to remain quiet about it, she needs to know it is top secret,” the lawyer said,
“Would it not be better if she signed a confidential form before I disclose anything to her?” I asked.
“Like I said. You are a brilliant lady. I think Marvin is missing out on you. I will prepare the confidentiality form immediately,” Tessy said.
I took the contract paper and the forms to my room at the mansion. Marvin was also not at work. I could hear some light music from his room. I called one of the house staff to call him and tell him I was waiting for him in the living room.
As I sat down in the living room, I could remember when I had to save him from one of the attempts on his life. I knew the contractor would be planning and scheming because I had killed every qualified assassin meant to take me out. The contractor would need to do some recruitment.
I wondered why the Contractor had not called. Was it that he did not want to confirm me as Number One? Or does he want to order me to be killed? Whichever way, he would still need those documents.
Who even placed a hit on Marvin? The Contractor must have gotten the placement from someone who will benefit from the death of Marvin and the only person I know for now is Uncle Jonah.
“You wanted to see me,” Marvin said, breaking the thoughts that were flowing freely in my mind.
“Yes! I got the contract here. I thought you would want to take a look at it before my meeting with June,” I said.
“Have you looked at it? He asked.
“Of course I have,” I said.
“So what do you think?” he said.
“I think it is okay,” I said.
“If you say it is okay, then I believe it is okay,” Marvin said, smiling and getting up to leave the living room.
“If you don’t get through it Marvin, I will not be seeing Miss June on your behalf. You need to go through it,” I said.
“Hmm, okay, drop it on the table. I will go through it when I am done. Thank you,” said Marvin as he left the living room and climbed up the stairs to his room.
I watched him take every step to his room and I felt I was letting go a big part of me go. It felt like I was giving up my happiness to Miss June. It did not feel normal. But this is a business proposition and I would have to view it that way.
The day of the meeting with Miss June finally arrived. I sat in a stylish, dimly lit restaurant, a sense of unease gnawing at my stomach. This was no ordinary date. It was a strategic move in the high-stakes game Marvin had set in motion.
I had called Miss June earlier to inform her of a security meeting I would love to have with her. She asked me if Marvin was coming too and I told her she was getting fond of Marvin in her short time of joining us. We both laughed.
Miss June walked in, and I was immediately struck by her elegance and confidence. She had an air of mystery about her, a woman who held her cards close to her chest. We exchanged pleasantries, and as we delved into our conversation, I could sense that there was more to Miss June than met the eye.
“So what about my security detail you wanted me to know about? Was there any change? Because I did not notice any,” Miss June said.
“I never said anything about your security detail. I said I would love to have a briefing with you on certain security issues that were quite important,” I said.
Miss June looked at me with a confused expression. “You mean you wanted to brief me about the security of my company in a restaurant?” she asked.
I laughed, “You are a very smart woman and that is why I like you,” I said.
“So tell me what is this about?” Miss June asked.
I took out the confidentiality form and placed it in front of her. She looked at it and shook her head.
“Why should I sign these? You have not said anything," June lamented.
“Look, June, I know you admire and like Marvin. I am here on his behalf. I don’t know how this may seem to you, but what am I about to reveal to you could affect his life in ways we do not want. So I would plead that you sign this.” I said.
“I would only do this because of my trust and respect for you.” She said as she signed the confidentiality form.
“Marvin wants you to marry him,” I said.
“And he could not tell me himself or propose to me like any man would do to a lady,” June said.
"No! It is not like that. He wants you to marry him in a special way. Please go through this,” I pleaded with her.
Marvin's demands for the marriage contract hung over our heads, a constant reminder of the unconventional path we were on. I couldn't help but wonder if Miss June would agree to the terms, or if she'd see through the layers of deception that surrounded us.
As we discussed the contract, Miss June surprised me with her willingness to entertain the idea. She had a shrewd business sense, and it was obvious that she saw this as an opportunity. Her eyes gleamed with ambition, and it made me wonder if we had underestimated her.
