CHAPTER 63: WE ARE NOT RIVALS

I met Marvin in the bar with June, having a nice time. Though June was ignorant about the situation at the moment, she was surprised to see me because she had not seen me in a while. I had delivered the marriage contract and had gone incommunicado.

“Hello Cass! Such a long time, what are you doing here,” said June, and she was truly happy to see me.

“I am great June and I am happy to see you are settled now. I came here to see Marvin. Would you mind if I stole him away from you for a few minutes?” I asked, smiling back at her.

“Oh no! Not a problem. Take as much time as you think you should. I would be fine if it was you,” June said.

When Marvin stood up without saying a word and bowed to excuse herself from June. His bodyguard followed him but I waved to let him know that it was close enough, since I needed some privacy.

“What are you doing here?” Marvin asked, looking at me with disdain.

“I missed you,” I said, trying to smile.

We looked at each other for some time. I was wondering if the love he had for me had died. Everything I did was to ensure that he was very protected and very safe. But right here and right now, he thinks I was the cause of his misfortunes.

“So you believe Ken over…..” I was trying to make a statement but he cut me off.

“Damn Ken! He is just full of cabbage and always does something for the pretense. I do not take him seriously as I know he does not have my interest at heart”, Marvin replied.

“So why are you annoyed with me? I don’t get it,” I said.

“You deceived me, Cassie. I hope I can call you that now,” Marvin replied.

I really wished I had been a changed person before I met him. But this is me he is angry with. This version was what he needed to stay alive and I was not going to apologize for risking my life to save the love of my life.

Marvin was on the edge and I knew something was wrong. There was something he was not telling me and I know it is either we worked together or we ended up dead. I needed him and his love, but I also needed him because he was now a father.

“What is the matter, Marvin? I know you very well and I am sure something is wrong,” I said.

I could feel June’s constant gaze on us. Our facial expressions were really giving out what we felt inside and any sensible person would have known that we felt something for each other.

“The police are on to me, Cassie. I do not know what to do,” he said. He was really shaking.

“I am not comfortable discussing this in front of June, her constant gaze rattles me,” I said.

“Have you become soft? What happened to you?” Marvin asked.

We both agreed that we should meet at his place in the evening so that we did not make June uncomfortable. I told Marvin that I would be coming with Larry and he should be open to talking to him.

I waved at June, she waved back. I went to her table and gave her a peck.

“I am so sorry I took him for that long," I said.

“It is okay, Cass, I understand,” June replied.

“Yeah, we have some security issues we have to deal with, but we have agreed not to disturb your day my dear. We will treat the issue later,” Marvin said.

“If it is a security issue that needs urgent attention, I can leave, Marvin. I do understand the peculiarity of Cass’s job,” June said.

“Don’t worry June, you are far too kind. I will discuss this with him later, as I need to deal with some other issues too. Thank you for your hospitality,’ I said, leaving them and waving bye to June.

I could not help but be envious of June. That was like my life she was living. How come? I have done everything to keep the lover of my life around and here comes someone who does not know what I have been through to be enjoying its rewards.

Two years looked too far. What was I thinking? I should not blame anyone but myself. Right now I need to know who the spy is in Marvin’s camp that was giving away so much information to the Contractor.

Larry came back from wherever he went and came to my room. We do not stay in the same room, but our rooms are opposite each other. He took a beer from the fridge, sat on the table, and looked at me.

“How are you and the baby doing?” Larry asked.

It was the first time in a while I was reminded that I was pregnant. I had forgotten that I was with a child, not that I did not know, but I did not have time to think about it. All my mind was focused on keeping us alive.

“Thanks, Larry, we are fine,” I said, smiling at him. Larry has been good to me and it feels good to have him by my side in all that we were going through.

“The Senator called, he wants us to eliminate Senator Alby for kidnapping his child,” Larry said.

“You told him we would take care of his rivals, didn’t you?” I said.

“So we should take the job. How much do you want for it?” Larry asked.

“Larry, not now, please, I have so much going on and I do not want to eliminate any politician. If you do one, you will be caught up in a web of lies and deceptions,” I said.

“So what do you want us to do?” Larry asked.

I told him we would be going to see Marvin because Marvin was in trouble with the police and though he has not narrated what happened, I would be needing his assistance to figure out how to help Marvin.

“So you still want to help him?” Larry asked.

“I love him and you know that,” I said.

“Does he know that? And does he feel the same way you do?” Larry asked.

“I guess he does. From the way he looks at me, I think he still loves me,” I replied.

“Wow! The great Cassie depends on guesswork,” Larry continued.

“That is not fair, Larry,” I said.

“Does he even know that you are pregnant with him?” Larry asked. He was really getting irritated at my answers.

“Please stop this, what are you driving at?” I asked, showing that I was displeased at his insistent way of being annoying.

I know Larry cared so much for me, but I am in love with Marvin and Marvin’s life was in danger, not Larry's. I thought he understood that I would go to any length to save the father of my child. He needed to stay alive to see his child.

“I only wanted to ensure that you were okay, Cassie. I am sorry?” Larry said.

“Larry, please focus, in a few months' time I will not be able to carry out so many functions in the world we are building and I will need you. I know I can count on you,” I said.

“You can count on me and you know that,” Larry said.

“Okay, Larry. Also, know that Marvin is not your rival and I love you both in different ways“ I said, pleading with Larry as if I was begging him to accept Marvin.
