CHAPTER 69: HIDDEN FACTS

The Senator was in a meeting and we had to wait in my mini truck. My stomach was hurting but I could not tell Larry. I just wanted to have a meeting with the Senator.

Larry looked at me as I struggled in pain and tried my best to pretend that I was okay. I had almost forgotten that I was pregnant and that my lifestyle and condition had to change.

“Cassie, you don’t look good, we can cancel this meeting so that you can get some treatment,” Larry said.

“Don’t bother Larry. I would be fine,” I said.

I wanted to be the one to talk to the Senate president so that he could see the seriousness and the advantage of keeping Senator Alby alive for now. I know that the Senate President is vexed, but this was what the gang wanted.

A call came in and Larry had to get there but I could hear from the caller that the Senator would see us now and wanted us to come in through the back door.

“I am sorry you had to come in through the back door,” he said, washing his hands.

“This is New York and not Washington DC. We do not have to enter here like criminals,” I said.

“We do not know who is watching and you guys are not saints either,” Senator Thomas said.

I could not argue much. We were not saints. In the real sense, we were criminals with high and influential powers that even a Senate president may need.

“We’ve come to you with a proposal because we are not killing Senator Alby as you requested,” I said.

“Go ahead, I am listening,” Senator Thomas said.

I tried explaining to the senator why we had chosen to keep Alby alive but he did not buy it. He brought up the argument of how I told him that people like Senator Alby should not be allowed to live because of the kidnapping of his daughter.

I agreed with him but tried to make him see the reasons why we did not want to kill the Senator. I know we do not want to tell him we do not want to dabble in politics, because killing one politician means you can kill any politician, including him.

“Senator, can I speak to you in private?” I asked.

“You can speak here. I believe that whoever is here has earned their trust to be here,” Senator Thomas said.

“Well, I agree, but what I want to tell you is for your ears only,” I said.

Everywhere was filled with tension in that house as Senator Thomas rejected my offer to spare Senator Alby's life. The coldness in his eyes spoke volumes of the depth of his anger and pain. He wanted retribution for the abduction of his daughter, Laila, and he saw Senator Alby as the architect of that suffering.

"Senator Alby deserves to pay for what he did," Senator Thomas declared, his voice steady but filled with resentment. "I won't let him escape justice."

I nodded solemnly, understanding the depths of a father's pain. Senator Thomas had endured the torment of having his daughter snatched away, and the desire for vengeance was a powerful force. But we could use this to our advantage and he could use this to control the Senate. He would be a very powerful man.

"Senator," I began cautiously, "there might be alternatives to killing him. We could expose his actions, ruin his political career, and ensure that he faces the legal consequences. You could also use him to control the Senate. I understand he has a large following at the Senate," I said.

But Senator Thomas was resolute. He would not take my explanation as a buffer to what Senator Alby had done.

"No, Cassie. I want him dead. I won't rest until he pays for what he did to my daughter." Senator Thomas declared, his voice filled with anger and vengeance.

As I left the room, a sinking feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. I sensed that he wouldn't stop at mere exposure; he would send men to kill Senator Alby, unleashing a cycle of violence that would only deepen the wounds and get us involved in politics. I have tried to avoid direct confrontation with politicians and this was one of my reasons.

I met Larry in the other room discussing with the others. I guess they were all sharing their opinions about Senator Alby. I hope Larry spoke some sense to them because I failed to convince Senator Thomas of the option the Martinez Gang had agreed upon.

"Cassie," Larry said, his brow furrowed with concern, "Senator Thomas is not going to stop until Senator Alby is dead. We need to find a way to intervene, to prevent this from escalating." Larry said.

I nodded in agreement, my mind already racing with possibilities. The Senate President was going to take his pound of flesh.

"We can't let this cycle of violence continue. If Senator Thomas goes through with this, it will only lead to more bloodshed," I said.

Larry sighed, running a hand through his hair. "We have to find a way to make him reconsider, to show him that there are alternatives to revenge."

I pondered the options, the stakes higher than ever. "We need to act fast. If Senator Thomas sends men to kill Senator Alby, it would be a point of no return. We have to find a solution that satisfies his need for justice without resorting to murder."

I dropped Larry at the Hotel. I told him I needed to speak with Marvin and I drove to Marvin's mansion. Marvin greeted me at the door of the living room with a warm smile, a stark contrast to the weight that hung in the air.

We sat in the dimly lit living room, surrounded by memories of a time when life was simpler, and the complexities of power and revenge were distant concerns. Marvin spoke about his successful marriage contract with June, how I played an important role, and the joy evident in his eyes.

I listened attentively, a mixture of happiness and sorrow settling within me. The bond we shared had weathered storms, but the secrets I carried threatened to alter the course of our connection.

As Marvin spoke about his plans and dreams, I couldn't help but wonder how the shadows of the present would shape the future. The revelation of Uncle Jonah's manipulation, and the turmoil with Senator Alby, were all threads in the intricate tapestry of our lives.

The room was bathed in the soft glow of candlelight as Marvin and I lay together. The intimacy we shared was a bittersweet reminder of what could have been.

I wanted to lose myself in the moment, to forget the complexities that surrounded us, but the truth lingered, a silent barrier between us.

Marvin's touch was tender, his love palpable. But as he moved closer, a surge of emotions flooded over me. I couldn't bear the weight of the secret I carried within me, the truth that would forever change the dynamics of our relationship.

"I can't do this," I whispered, my voice catching in my throat.

Marvin looked at me, concern etched across his face. "Cassie, what's wrong?"

Tears welled up in my eyes as I struggled to find the words, but I could not tell Marvin that I was pregnant and could not hide it any longer.

Silence hung in the air, the revelation sinking in. Marvin's eyes widened with a mix of shock and realization.

“What is wrong with you, Cassie? We used to be great lovers and I know you still love me,” Marvin said. He almost cried and I could feel the passion inside of him, but not today and not now.

The weight of the truth can not be lifted from my shoulders and it has placed uncertainty over what lies ahead for me. If this was the burden I had to carry, then I am ready to do it to keep my Marvin safe.

As Marvin and I lay in the quiet aftermath, I couldn't help but reflect on the complications that awaited me. The impending violence with Senator Alby was going to get complex if the Senate president went along with his plan. I had put Larry over him to ensure we knew what he was doing.

As we drifted into sleep, I pondered the choices that lay ahead. The shadows of consequences loomed over me, and I was determined to find a way to navigate the turbulent waters that awaited me.

In the quiet of the night, my phone buzzed, and I reached for it, the glow illuminating the room. It was a text from Larry, and as I read the message, my heart sank.

The Senate President is moving. Expect consequences. Tomorrow is the date.

The words sent a chill down my spine. The impending violence was no longer a distant threat but a reality that demanded action.

As Marvin slept beside me, oblivious to the storm that loomed on my horizon, I knew that the choices I made in the coming days would shape the course of the empire I wanted to build.
