Marvin was excited about the court judgment. It meant a win for him and, of course, knowing who Uncle Jonah was, we had advised him to be careful because Uncle Jonah wanted everything. It was glaring to see that June had helped in all of this, but she was getting paid also.
The only person not getting paid was me! Yes, what I have been compensated in exchange for that, is the baby in my belly. Larry was happy that things looked like they were finally getting over. He does not mind not getting paid. The whole scene had looked chaotic from the first day I agreed to take the contract.
I was making millions of dollars even though I was not getting paid by Marvin, and I was also not being paid by Sacho, being the head of the Martinez Gang. Everyone knew he was a figurehead of its operation and that I was the brain behind the organization.
“The Senate President wants a meeting, Cassie,” Larry said.
“Tell him, we will let him know when we are free,” I said, not minding that he was one of our big allies.
“Did you put a mark on Uncle Jonah?” I asked.
Larry was shocked, his face looked puzzled at the question. "Do you want him dead, or by mark, you meant to ask if I put a man on him? Well, I put a man on him since we have not decided to kill him yet," Larry said.
“I want him gone,” I said.
“Don’t you think you need to talk to Marvin about killing his Uncle first? He may not like the idea,” Larry said.
“But we have been here for almost an hour and no sign of Marvin even when he knows we are in his office,” I said.
Immediately after, I said that, Marvin showed up dragging his feet like some that had climbed a mountain and would be needing a rest.
“What is the problem?” I asked, as I could see he looked frustrated at himself.
Marvin explained that Officer Page was with him the whole time, he was asking him several questions about himself and me. He said the officer wanted to know if I was the one kidnapping and killing people for him. He said that the officer thought I was the one who kidnapped Uncle Jonah a few months ago when the kidnapping happened.
Marvin had had to rearrange his security architecture at the Mansion too. That was not part of the plan, because I believe that those men are good at what they do. But he had seen the Contractor kidnap a sitting Senator and was concerned for his life.
June walked into the office and there was this sudden silence that welcomed her entrance. After standing for a while, she broke the quietness.
“Please what is going on?” she asked.
“June can’t just come into my office without an invitation or notice,” Marvin said with a flat face. No one could tell what his emotions were. I did not think he was angry.
“Okay, you can say that to me but not to Cassie, for goodness’s sake! I am your wife. At least show me some relevance,” June said.
“When you signed that contract you knew what you were getting into, no one first you,” Marvin said.
I did not think this was appropriate. June, including everyone who was there present, had sacrificed a lot for us to keep him alive. At least he should appreciate her for that even though she was paid.
I felt Marvin was stressed out with fatigue and that was why he lashed at June that way. I do not think that his meeting with the police officer went well. As he was acting like he needed someone to shout at.
“Marvin, this is not right, you can not talk to June that way,” I said.
“Do you want me to leave?’ Asked June.
Everywhere was tense, and I saw another wave of quietness that engulfed the room. Everyone was waiting for Marvin to say something. We all turned to him when June asked him the question.
June you don't have to leave, I think Marvin is just tired from the happenings of the day and with Officer Pagr on his neck. What do you need to know? I am here for you. You can ask me,” I said.
“Cassie, that’s the problem. I don’t want anything from you. I want something from my husband, and he does not want ot share,,” June said.
“What do you wish to know? Sat it now I would love to know,” Marvin said.
June just kept quiet without saying anything. She was very livid, I thought she was the one clamoring for revelations of what was going on. She quietly went to the bar to get a drink.
I decided to step in. I know Marvin is not treating June right, but I also think that June was stepping within her boundaries. She had a written contract for this marriage, and she should keep to its terms. I guess it was hard.
“Marvin, we need to sort out the police issue. The senate president wants to see me and I think it is time to call in a few favors if you agree,” I said.
“We honestly need to push the police off our backs. So what do you suggest we do?” Marvin asked.
“We will be asking him to call top police officers to get them to buy into our piece of the action if they can work for us. We will not have only the influence of the Senate but the power and authority of the police,” I said.
.
June nodded her head in agreement, as if she knew what was going on. She was still feeling the same way she felt earlier.
“Marvin, I want to help. I am a friend and not an enemy, but you keep treating me as an outsider,” June said.
“I do not want more trouble. It looks like the more I solve these problems the more they spring forth. I am tired and do not know who to trust except Miley,” Marvin said with his hands on his chin.
